I started re-reading all of my halo novels today since I just bought Ghost of Onyx and Contact Harvest, and notices something that piqued my curisoity in First Strike.
at the end of chapter 18, specifically page 171, Cortana is in control of a covenant flagship and is tryign to reassemble coding for the firing mechanisms on the ship that a covenant AI deleted. She comes to the revelation that by messing with the EM fields of the plasma, instead of getting a plasma bolt in the shape of a giant glob, she could direct the plasma into a laser-fine columnated beam. She then proceeds to use this new software to slice a few cruisers stem to stern with scalpel like percision.
So i was thinking, did Bungie get the idea for the spartan laser from this technology Cortana improved upon? they're both really similar. the spartan laser shows an energy meter like other covenant based plasma weapons do. both the ships improved plasma-laser system and the spartan laser have charge delay times, and both wreak a devastating amount of damage.
