I started re-reading all of my halo novels today since I just bought Ghost of Onyx and Contact Harvest, and notices something that piqued my curisoity in First Strike.

at the end of chapter 18, specifically page 171, Cortana is in control of a covenant flagship and is tryign to reassemble coding for the firing mechanisms on the ship that a covenant AI deleted. She comes to the revelation that by messing with the EM fields of the plasma, instead of getting a plasma bolt in the shape of a giant glob, she could direct the plasma into a laser-fine columnated beam. She then proceeds to use this new software to slice a few cruisers stem to stern with scalpel like percision.

So i was thinking, did Bungie get the idea for the spartan laser from this technology Cortana improved upon? they're both really similar. the spartan laser shows an energy meter like other covenant based plasma weapons do. both the ships improved plasma-laser system and the spartan laser have charge delay times, and both wreak a devastating amount of damage.

The spartan laser is a portable scale... the covenant turrets are HUUUUUUUGE...
And the spartan laser was developed during the spartan programs, As spartans where trained weapons, armor (yeah, Mark vi) where developed, besides you cannot start developing new "super weapons" during a war, and the timeline wouldnt match, if cortana would have developed the spartan laser she would have had only a year to do that (as the first strike and halo 3 arent that much apart, first strike is what happens between halo1 and halo2).

Lasers have been developed by humans for quite some time now.

Also, Eric Nylund has wrote this book, Bungie gave him pretty much free hands to make the books, and he might have just made the Plasma turret idea himself.

idk about not being able to develop super weapons during a war. Nazi Germany seemed to pull off the V-2 rockets and Messerschmidt 262-- the worlds first jet propelled aircraft, pretty well during the war.

The way I interpreted it was that cortana unlocked the secret of refining covenant ship plasma turrets beyond what the covenant had developed, and during the time towards the end where they get back to earth and during halo2, the spartan laser was under development as a man-portable version of the technology cortana implemented in the ship's plasma turrets. i think theres a lsight probability that, given all the specs of making the beam, it wouldnt take too long for engineers to fabricate a unit.

but thats just my take. your guess is as god as mine.

yea, i saw the same thing while i was reading the book, and since First Strike came out before H3, then it very well could be where they cot the idea for the 'Splaser
