Hello everyone, l've been checking out these forums for help on making a Megaman x helmet, and what with me being cheap, l have been using a mix of different tutorials l've found here and online, and it's alright so far! Without this forum, l'd be lost.

I was originally going to do the standard Megaman X helmet:

But l wanted to do something a bit simpler, with an easy shape, so l decided to do the Dead Rising variation:

And thus began the X Rising Project!

These are my materials:

-newspaper
-Gorilla wood glue
-hot glue gun
-paint brushes
-bondo
-sandpaper
-cardboard
-paints and sealant
-fiberglass cloth
-balloons

How I've been doing it

First, I blew up a balloon. I tried to make it my head size. I made it a bit too big, but fortunately so is the Dead Rising helmet so it worked out!

I papier mache'd the balloon. I did about 2 layers of newspaper and watered down wood glue. Sometimes I'd slab on wood glue that l didn't water down. It made it thick enough that when I popped the balloon inside, it didn't warp the papier mache's shape (too bad l couldn't say that about the first attempt at the helmet. It imploded into a wrinkled mess)

I then used reference pics to cut out the shape of the helmet. Looking back now, l wish l cut a bit more off the bottom, since it's a little snug getting the helmet on. When it's on it's a little loose on the sides but l'm going to use some spongey padding to fix that.

Now that l have acess to the inside of the helmet, I cut strips off of some cardboard boxes and glued them to each other inside the helmet for support. I also cut some cardboard out, and started making some of the shapes of the helmet, such as the exterior outline (l guess that's what you'd call it)

Before doing any more detailing with cardboard, l papier mache'd the outline to see how it looked, and it looks alrifht. I also used watered down wood glue to stick fiberglass cloth on the inside. Not sure if this was a good idea, as the fiberglass seems to be irritating my skin. My plan is to papier mache over the fiberglass, then put padding inside so my head doesn't touch it...should be good..l hope.

Here its current status (it's not on the mannequin head straight, its not actually that lopsided):

I still have to make the top part of the helmet, Bondo the exterior, sand it, paint it, seal it, and add a visor and pad the inside. The visor is just going to be a cut-up 2L bottle of pop. I'm also going to make a Megaman sticker, seen above the visor.

I know there were probably easier ways to make the helmet (or ways to make it sturdier), but l'm cheap and wanted a quick project to do (especially with Comic Con coming up!) and this helmet seemed simple enough.*

Once I get more work done, l'll post some new pictures of the progress. If it turns out alright, I might go back to make the actual X helmet, or at least old school Megaman's helmet.*

Thanks for looking!
