Well it has been a while since I have posted on the 405th. A long ways back I had started a space marine scratch build (http://www.405th.com/showthread.php/24976-40K-Space-Marine-Scratch-Build). But it wasn't working out the way I wanted, and I didn't have a lot of time to work on it. So it fell off for a while. During the last year I was able to get back into the build, but I started it all over again using EVA foam. I chronicled the main build over at the Obscurus Crusade (http://z6.invisionfree.com/Obscurus_Crusade/index.php?showtopic=1212&hl=).
Here is quick run through of the build. I used the pepakura patterns to start with. I did some custom scaling to get the pieces the way I wanted them. After this I transferred the patterns onto sheets of EVA foam. Then I cut out and assembled everything using heaps of hot glue. At this point I took inspiration from Xrobots, and coated my armour in plastic resin. First I sealed it using PVA (white glue). I then coated the pieces with several coats of Smooth-on 65d. All in all the process worked great, and I was very happy with the results.
After this, I built the rigging for the suit. This included some aluminum frame pieces, and lots of webbing and velcro. Then I painted and weathered the suit. I went for a matte finish, and subtle weathering, and I really like how it turned out.
I have worn it to one convention so far, and it was great. I had almost no problems with it. the biggest problems were during the trip home, where it got a little beat up. But I was able to fix it up. Now I can start thinking about upgrades.
Questions and comments are welcome. Thanks for checking this out!
