What i personally did first, was the low definition mk 6 bicep. and that was EASY (but fun!)

But i have done the above mentioned as well and they are also goo choices!

Cheers

Any armor piece that is low definition should be an easy first pep in my opinion, even a low def Mk 6 helm. Anything higher than low def tends to have many small pieces that you have to fold and glue together and for first timers it can be frustrating even on a small piece of armor like a HD handplate. If you want something to build thats easy and recognizable I would go for a low def mk 6 helm.

Do a handplate, if you are planning on building the armor anyway, it is quick and easy and has enough small "tricky" areas that will give you some idea on what order some tabs need to be glued and why. The hd handplate is a good choice, because you won't learn much from something too simple. My best advice would be to build symmetrically. It keeps warping to a minimum.

If you are looking for a helm to do, any of the testers work well. Low def files are good. If you have the patience for finicky, time consuming detailed work, a med to hi def mark vi is a fun build. You may want to check out MrOreo123's smoothed file thread, there are some great files there that are easy to work with and still have some great detail!

I've found things like the boots, shins, and codpiece to be pretty easy first time pep-jobs.

I know it's not a helmet, like you were asking about, but you should easily be able to knock one of these out in an hour or two. It'd give you a bit of practice before moving on to a helmet.

Anything on the wikia from Halo, combat evolved. Super-easy. But I agree with dungbeetle, a HD H3 handplate would be very good. You'll catch on quick.
