Finally, a half decent update:

Today I started tinkering with the visor prototype:

It's made using the typical dual visor method. Here's the inner layer being glued into the back of the outer layer:

The visors I used this time around are made for Gath windsurfing helmets. You can see them HERE.

Once I've got them polished and all of the dust is gone, I'll be making a mold so I can make a couple of vacforming bucks and crank out a few more copies. This means I'll finally have an accurate visor with the appropriate raised and beveled edges:

This new shape combined with the mirroring I'd already figured out should make for one heck of a finished piece.

if you want to vacuuform visors, make sure your base is as smoooth as possible, even the slightest dust particle will dissort the vision.
but i think you already know that.
had it with my own visors :p
there are now about 20 sh*tty visors lying around here

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with it.

I didn't do much with the helmet redux over the weekend, but I guess there's not all that much left to get done. Mostly I concentrated on the last bit, making a new schnozzwidget:

The last thing I did with it was a quick coat of black primer:

I'll probably give it a coat or two of gloss before I mold it.

I like the term "schnozzwidget." It's a neologism. I made it.

Schnozzwidget fits just fine.... :) . The new details on this puppy are amazing. Particularly fond of the re-work of the underside of the brim. Fine work sir!!

Yesterday I installed the headlight lenses in the Wash helmet:

To get the shape, I took a mold of some heavy duty snap fastener heads (like you get at the fabric store) and then cast them in clear resin.

In other news, I also started the last two molds for the helmet redux:

The little block on the right is the schnozzwidget mold. I'll have castings out of that today and I'll finish the visor buck mold this afternoon as well.

Nice work Thorssoli. The additions really make the helmet stand out from the crowd.

Thanks. I'm pretty happy with the results.

Yesterday I finished the jacket mold for the visor bucks:

Today I'll be making the mothermold so I can crank out a few casts once my next shipment of casting resin arrives.

I also finished the pep model for the EVA helmet. I used to think I was making the EVA helmet a bit too big. Not anymore:

Here's a shot from head-on:

Here's a shot with my Hyperballistik EOD helmet for size comparison:

In other news, I've started this thing:

I'll be writing up the build separately once I've made a bit more progress.

I'm going to have to agree on the size of the EVA. From the looks of it, if you made it smaller, it may show to much of your lower jaw. Also, in the reference pics I've seen, it seems to be a larger than normal helmet. I think it looks pretty good. Can't wait to see how it looks when completed. I'm interested in how you do the visor for it. Again, nice work!

I'm pretty happy with it. Here's a comparison shot with my MkVI in progress:

And another:

I think it's about right.

In other news, I finished the mold for the MkVI visor forming bucks:

I've got the first few casts lined up for vacforming:

I'll probably be doing these six or eight at a time in clear PETG and then I can dye them to whatever color I like. If I don't like the results, I'll try making them in the same amber acrylic I was making the old visors out of.

Stay tuned...

The EVA looks great. The scale couldn't be better, especially compared with the other helmets in your shop. I keep telling myself I'm going to try creating a visor like this but my lack of a real workshop has it hold for now. I'll be real interested in seeing how yours turn out.

New visor:

This was a test pull in thin, clear PETG plastic that I had on hand. I'm planning on making future copies out of the same orange-tinted sheet that my old visors were made of.

Here's a shot with someone wearing it to show how hard it is to see into:

And a side shot to showcase the shape:

Now that I have all of the molds working, I'm going to start a classified thread if anyone wants either a copy of the helmet or just the visor.

Stay tuned...

Dear god thorssoli, still working on this thing? It's beautiful, but please don't tell me it's the same one from 4 years ago that your still working on. I don't feel like reading through 100 pages xD Just like the one I remember, this is amazing.

If you dial back through the last 20 or 30 pages, you'll see that I finished nine of these suits in 2010. Now I'm tinkering with a few upgrades here and there when I find a bit of time and I'm still making a few more suits for some of the remaining characters from Red vs. Blue.

That includes this guy:
6814935974_0eabdf066e_o.jpg

Which is coming along nicely.

Meta. Yes. That's why I need this:

The helmet is coming along:
6967621973_00855a7894_o.jpg

The plan is to make it all shiny and smooth and then start adding the details. For now I keep getting distracted while trying it on:

Stay tuned...
