Okay, so, in this tutorial I am doing it tells me to make a plane (done), then it says to make a material/put the material on the plane. When I do this, according to the tutorial, it should show up in the Top View, but it's only appearing in the Perspective View, any idea to what I am doing wrong (yes, I am doing EXACTLY what it says, read the first step at least 50 times, but it still will not cooperate)?

there is a number of variables that could be the problem the most common one would be the object properties have default of showing materials in grey, so you could potentially just unclick that box and reload the material from the material editor and it should show up. if that doesnt work ill download the same tutorial and help you out, considering i own the program and have been taking some classes at college for 3ds, right now we are doing a 3d model of a car that we get to pick, im doing the DB9 Aston Martin which had its debut in Casion Royale

If you can help that would be great!

Try what Assassin suggested and a couple things:

In the material editor, click the little checkered box (the one below the material slots, not the one on the side shelf)

Sometimes you need to check "double sided" box in the material editor as well.

Other than that I can't think of anything else.

And if you "Freeze" the plane, you need to right click, go to "Object Properties in the pull down menu, and in the display, uncheck the "show frozen as gray" box.

I hate being a noob... where would "Object Properties" be?

oh crap right i forgot about the show material on object button, yeah i believe thats what skullcandy was talking about, drag and drop the material and if it doesnt show up on the plane click show material button in the material editor window, then if not continue to object properties as i said, but if all else fails make your you dont have some source of lighting because if you do everything else turns dark and only the light will allow you to see your object (i actually had some problems with my car blueprints with lighting). but yeah ill take a look at the tutorial

crap lol just was looking at tutorial and noticed that your doing a bluepring job of adding a picture, one good thing to remember is that usually the picture will end up on the opposite side of the plane, so switching from top view to bottom might help as well, we had to mess with a whole bunch of view ports to get the 4 sides of our car blueprints too match up cause of the opposite side deal. it just happens i dont know y

Highlight the object, and right click, a big box with a lot of words will open, near the bottom it says "Object Properties"
For some reason it's grayed out to where I can't edit the properties...

OK, excuse me if this is a little off but I'm reciting this from memory so bare with me...

1) Open the create panel
2) In Basic Geometry click Plane
3) Drag out the plane in the top view
4) Make sure the new plane is selected
5) Open the material editor
6) Assign the current material to the plane you have selected
7) Make sure Show materials on objects button is checked down (looks like a little checker board if I rememeber rightly)
8) This should have greyed the plane out
9) In the diffuse slot of the material select the image option
10) Select that background image

If the image only comes up in one viewport you may have the settings for the other viewports set to render basic materials only (or something)
1) Right click the name of the viewport (eg "Top")
2) Make sure "Smooth and Highlights" is selected

Hope that helped...

hmm did you import the picture or whatever as a bitmap? importing as a different file does create changes

here try this over again

select plane
create plane
in modify tab make the plane to the dimensions you need
if you didnt click anywhere else you should still have it selected
click on the material editor
look for where it says diffuse under blinn parameters
click the box next to it and click the file type you are importing...its better and easier if you convert the file to bitmap and select bmp
then it will appear in the material editor as a spherical shape drag and drop that onto your plane, then click show standard map in viewport (it should be a checkered cube in the middle) that should show it (everything should be default before you start though)

try that and let me know what happens

nvm looks like im a little late
