another noob with an HD MKVI build

Alright guys, I've made uber amounts of progress since this post working day and night on this armor. I've got 47 days and only 6 pieces left to pep (including 2 hand plates). well, I'll just post some pics like I've been dying to.

Alright, been quite a while since I posted in this thread for a few reasons. #1, I spent 5 days cutting out and 3 days assembling the HD chest only to find out it was too small. Then, I re-scaled it to the proper size but had to take a break because of exams. When I was ready to get back to it, I found out I had to take calc 2 in the summer if I wanted to get into calc 3 in the fall semester (right now) so I really didn't do a whole lot of this all summer. When I last left this thread, I'd pepped one thigh, a codpiece, and a helmet. Now, I'm at the following list.

Helmet: pepped and 99% fiberglassed
Chest/ Back: pepped and resined
Codpiece: Pepped and fiberglassed
Right Shoulder: scaled and ready for pepping
Left shoulder: Pepped and resined
Right forearm: in progress
Left Forearm: pepped and resined.
Handplates: Scaled and in progress
Left thigh: Pepped and fiberglassed
Right thigh: Pepped and fiberglassed
Left shin: Pepped and resined
Right shin: pepped and fiberglassed
Boots: Need scale based on actual boots I wear underneath.

I decided to scrap the previous forearms and shoulders as they were getting messy with bondo and the scale was way wrong. the shoulders were way too big while the forearms were way too small. That said, I could wind up pepping the shoulders at a more correct size and find that my biceps are too big to fit in them (I don't do all of that weight lifting for nothing, lol). I have a much better attack plan for the bondo this time and will probably need less of it because I figured out the proper resining technique for the outsides of the parts (meaning no more warping requiring large amounts of bondo to even out the details).

Now that I have the chest/back done (which was 12 days of 4-12 hours each day) I am pretty much on the home stretch for pepping. all of the other parts have been pepped before (sans boots) and I know from that, that no other part takes longer than 3 days to pep. I'll be ready for halo 4 no problem (52 days to go) at this rate.

and day #2, with another attempt to ease my worry about the scale.

day #3 (8 total days of work at this point) and I finally can see that it will fit (but can't be 100% sure for about 10 more hours of work)

2012-09-11_19-45-04_656.jpg

I was mostly worried about the depth of my chest, as I have an abnormally deep ribcage, but I believe that even if I have to cut off the chest plate of my undersuit, I will fit no problem into the piece of armor.

2012-09-11_22-02-24_93.jpg

almost to the point where I can see if it will fit or not.

aaannnnd... it does

2012-09-12_06-42-40_917.jpg

even if it looks a little off center (meaning not wide enough therefore holding itself to one side) it is only because there is extra thickness in the "strap" so that all of the support beams can force it to hold its shape during resining and that will be remedied after the resining process.

Note that this would have been the last possible time for a test fit until after the fiberglass stage. the chest/back is physically impossible to get into unless it is split into two pieces or way bigger than the needed scale. I didn't test fit it at this point though because I was satisfied with my previous test fit and I don't like messing around with the parts too much until they are hardened so I don't cause any accidental damage.

and the finished piece. The ab plate does not attach directly to the chest plate, it will be held on later by straps so it doesn't restrict movement (as per the design of the armor, that's why it's so dang small)

2012-09-13_17-53-56_86.jpg

and the properly scaled left bicep (the pepping is leaps and bounds above my previous stuff)

and finally, the pic that made me realize just how far I've come in the last month and a half or less.

I do have a question though. I've ordered boots, visors, gloves, a PA system (temp one till I have my final electronics in place) and a custom neck seal. For the boot covers, how do you scale it without making a test one? is the separation shown in the pep file the proper amount of separation for that part and thus making the sole length from one end to the other a correct number? I'm not planning on spending uber amounts of time pepping the boots so any help would be great. Especially if I only have to pep once.

More updates to come, but for now, I got up at 5:00am to finish the right forearm pep before class, so I've got to go. Thanks for looking

Thanks guys. i owe a lot to longshot and various long forgotten tutorials here (except the one that showed me about strapping the shoulders to each other under the chest piece. i'll always remember that one) but any electronics work i do is mine and mine alone. and rest assured, there will be lots of electronics in this suit. tiny leds, speakers, switches, batteries, etc are a daily thing for me, so expect nothing but epicness once i get to that stage.

Some things i have found i prefer:

1: freehanding every cut and score line with an exacto knife. using a straigtedge is too time consuming. plus i have a steady hand.
2: abnormally thick cardstock. it makes some of the details harder but holds its shape extremely well
3: elmers glue. not only does it give you some working time, but it doesn't have the burning and quick drying problems of hot glue
4: extremely thin outer coat of resin. you'll notice some pieces are different colors. this is because i found the proper amount of resin that will not require uber amounts of sanding later and prevents drips and accidental filling of the detail cavities.
5: even though the first 10 or so parts i made were essentially scrapped at one stage or another, jumping right in was the best thing i could have done. you can't learn pepping, resining, fiberglassing, bondoing, sanding, and painting from tutorials. you just can't. it's like me trying to tell someone how to drive a stick and expecting them to automatically possess the skill. the explanations and pics are invaluable, but the experience is better.
6: if someone tells you a forearm looks too big and a bicep looks too small, don't continue building that piece any further until you are either sure they are wrong or you just don't care if your armor is proportional. i took one bicep all the way to paint and then threw it away because i realized that it was too big.

That's all for now. i've got 4 hours to do homework so that i don't have to do any at home (class ends at 9:40 and second class starts at 2:15). this break between classes has been the only thing keeping me on track with schoolwork so i can keep working hard on the armor when i'm home. i'm sure i'll have an update tonight as i will probably be done pepping the right forearm.

Pardon the sign in the background, but that was the most well lit spot/angle in the basement at 5:00 am. I've been getting up at 5:00 almost every day to get some work done before classes. 46 days till halo 4 and 5 pieces to pep (including 2 handplates whichwill be very quick). I have a few more pics but i don't have the time to post them. Oh, and i did force the unresined forearm into its proper shape (to match the resined one) using hot glue and popsicle sticks for internal support. Looks identical now.

This set of pics is my favorite so far. I'm very impressed with it in this state even, and I can't wait to start bondoing it. I have 3 pieces to go. two hand plates and the left boot. early start tomorrow so I can work on the boot before school. the boot appears to have some extra length toward the bottom (and it looks freaking huge altogether) but when I held the shin up to it, it looked fine. I will probably wind up trimming the bottom up a bit so the boot isn't so tall though. I also took all of the reference pics I'll need for the whole process and I'm not buying how few shield ports (which will be acrylic windowed led spots) are in the game. he has the ability to turn up the shield anywhere on the armor so for there to be no shield ports on the helmet and boots is impossible. anyway, onto the pics. I have two exams this week and probably two next week, but honestly I'm not going to let them slow me down. doesn't mean I'm going to throw my exams, but I'm not going to lose entire days studying when I could be putting in a few hours here and a few hours there on armor.

and goodnight everyone. I've got to get some rest if I'm going to keep dragging myself out of bed at 5:00am every day.

This was posted on other forums first, so that's why the big explanations.

here is the answer to all of the questions about the visor that I have been getting (mostly from my friends through email albeit).

20120924_182652.jpg

now keep in mind, it is not fully seated because I have not completely removed the nubs where the support struts were. I will do this once I am happy with my fiberglassing job and am ready to move onto bondo. not a moment before. I will also be making the 3d effect by cutting a pattern out of a second visor and placing it over top of the first. Now off to pep the final 3 pieces so I can hopefully study worry-free tomorrow for my wednesday calc and friday physics exams. looks like I have 13 days in a row of good weather then nothing for a few days and then good enough weather all the way till october 14th. that's my goal. I want plenty of time to go around town in it and get some hype going for the release. I want to be in lots of pictures, lol.

alright. last pics before the final shot of the suit in its current state. I've got a calc exam in about 8 hours though so I've got some studying to do. pay no attention to the 3d printed web shooter in the background.

and that marks the end of the long campaign which is pepping.

left boot was finished yesterday morning as well. forgot to take pics. I'll do another laid out suit pic after my exam today.

thanks. obviously this is far from done, but I tried on some parts. I think the scale is spot on.

tried this on my personal computer and it said I didn't have enough storage to process the request of copy and paste. it's been acting up for a while so i'll just have to backup everything and reinstall my OS. anyway, I cleaned up the edges of the fiberglassed leg pieces in preparation for the second layer (sounds weird but if I didn't clean it up first, I won't be able to reach everywhere with the paint brush). so while I had everything cleaned up, I tried on what I could. the fit if very tight. might have to trim the bottom to allow for more range of motion but the scale is so perfect I'm not going to make a bigger one. see for yourself.

okay so I've been fiberglassing like a madman and I'm off to home depot in a few to get more paintbrushes. I have the left forearm and left bicep completely glassed (the bicep is still curing), and the right forearm is almost done but I need to get to home depot before they close or I'll be cut short tonight. I had a problem with the fitment of the shin over my big foot, so I had to cut a portion out of it. the cut came out very well imo and I'll probably use some interlocking rods/tubes and some magnets to make the part attachable/removable. here are some pics of what I'm talking about.

the first pics are after the cut with the part still in place

then the part I cut alone

then the shin without the part. this part needed to be the cleanest.

Looking good dude,

I decided a few days ago I'm going to build my own suit and wear it to next years EuroGamer Expo that we have here in the UK.

Might try starting the pepakura is weekend for the helmet and or the assault rifle and pistol.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the compliment. One tip though, save the helmet for last. If you build the helmet first, it will look way worse than if you did it At the end of the project. The helmet is the most detailed piece and the longest pep second only to the chest. I wish i would have waited till the end and i am actually considering re-pepping it after the release of halo 4

That's something I was thinking about... Waiting for halo 4 as I'm sure some better pep files would be released post release....

I now have a date it needs to be completed by, I need my build by the 26th of sept 2013 so may hold off till the end of the year and see if any good pep files are released..... I may just build a helmet in the mean time just as a little practice. Just don't resin it

^good idea to set it a year away, I've been working on mine off and on and it looks like I won't be able to finish it under a year. agordon, nice job man!"

I'll be well under a year with mine, but only because i've been at it nonstop for the last month or so.

Alright, not as much progress overall as i had hoped for yesterday, but i think you guys will enjoy this pic.

And thanks for the comments. they really do help keep me motivated.

College hasn't stopped me. I do homework during my down time (5 hours between first and second classes on m, w, f) and when i get home it's nothing but lifting weights and armor building. I commute though.

How many siblings you have? do you do on-campus college? lol
