Attaching Weapons To Armor

The magnet won't mess with simple circuits or any of the circuits that most of us use in our weapons (unless you go more high tech and use chips and such in your circuits).

I can take a large magnet to my cellphone with no Ill effect whatsoever (then again it is probably shielded:lol: ) anyway you shouldn't really worry about it messing your electronics if you are using just simple circuits.

The best bet when it comes to neodymium magnets would be to just get an old Hard drive and remove them from it.

Computer hard drives have two extremely powerful Neodymium magnets in them to control the read write head for the platters. Believe me those stories of losing fingers to Neo Mags are no lie, crushed the hell outta my finger trying to remove them from a hard drive (luckily the screwdriver got trapped between my finger and one of the magnets stopping them from clamping down on me) fun fun :D .

You only need one or two powerful magnets fiberglassed into the back vent capsules for this to work. You can fiberglass big thick steel washers into your weapons so that they are not magnetic after you take them off of your armor.

I realize that the washers will be slightly magnetized after they come into contact with the big block magnets but I doubt that they would have enough power to even stick to the fridge.

P.S.: Do not use an electromagnet. You think that regular magnets mess with electronics? An electromagnet is going to mess with your electronics and everyone else's that you pass by. As long as you don't run anything electrical near the block magnets you should be fine.

If you an old hard drive lying aroung, you're in luck. Just open up the case and poke around with a screwdriver or any other metalic object to find a nice pair of kidney bean shaped magnets and use your dremel with a reinforced wheel to liberate them from the HD. I don't know what type of magnets they are but they are very strong when attached to a piece of metal or the fridge, and they are extremely difficult to seperate from each other. If I ever get around to making a pair of magnums or an AR, I am going to mount one mag in the armor and one in the weapon.

BTW: when I say old, two of the drives were a respectable 2.4gb. The third one I tore apart was much closer to the cutting edge of technology at a whopping 4Gb!

I am planning on having holsters magnetized to my ODST. Not exactly canon, but makes it so I can use it for airsoft guns too.

Magnets would work very well. ;) Neodymium magnets are your best bet. You can find them online, and also in some common craft stores like michaels, or hobby lobby. I would say that if you are making a very large weapon, like a assault rifle, or something larger that you are planning on putting on your back, I would go with a magnet that is rated for 8 pounds or higher. If you're gonna make a cardboard, or pep weapon, the end product won't be that heavy, so you won't need anything that's capable of holding 25 pounds. Those can get rather dangerous. I had a bar magnet before that almost destroyed my tv from three feet away. Those things can be pretty dangerous if you're not experienced with them. If you're gonna make a smaller weapon though, like a magnum, or an smg, you could use smaller "button" neodymium magnets. Those are rated from 1-5 pounds, and can sometimes hold much larger stuff too! I'm gonna use them for my magnum when it's done. :) Overall, they are a good way to go. Good luck if you decide to use them! ;)

Your best bet would easily be as many others have said; a couple of Neodymium magnets. Chances are they will easily do the job for anything up to a prop weapon of Spartan Laser/Gravity Hammer sizes and weights really. And to ensure the weapons aren't magnetised, don't use magnets in the weapons themselves. For my own weapons I plan on housing a magnet in the thigh for the pistol and then two in the backplate for my sniper rifle, then counterpart metal washers in the respective areas on the weapons and hopefully, BAM! Magnetised weapon placement.

Also as far as getting them yanked off your back during a con? You'd feel it. You'd pretty much have to have no feeling in your torso to miss the weight of the weapon disappearing as well as the resistance the magnets would put up as someone was trying to yank it off.

This sounds interesting, but have any of you guys thought that with magnets walking about, you might get stuck to something, or other peoples stuff might stick to you? lol just a thought :D

I think they call that telekentetic ganking and I believe that it's legal because you didn't physically take their stuff. But it is a way to get free stuff at Con! :D

I stand corrected! Maybe those 25lb pull magnets would be a good investment! Free stuff ahoy!!!

I like the Phone Clip Method because I don't plan on making prop weapons for my back that are too heavy that it won't be able to hold.

There are two concerns that go along with this though. 1. Two phone clips will be next to impossible to line up by yourself not to mention have lined up properly to hold the weapon. 2. One phone clip will allow the weapon to swing around while you're moving because it simply won't be able to hold the position of any weapon large or small.

What about using both a Clip and a Medium to High Strength magnet to hold the weapon? With this you could have reliable means to hold the weapon up with less strain on just a magnet. And even if the magnet gives way with you bumping a door frame or so, the clip can take over with the weapon and you can simply right the weapon back over the magnet and back into position.

One additional idea with this concept would be an electronic latch over the clip's top if you plan to put the clip on your armor or a piston lock through the knob if you plan to put the knob on your armor, to help secure your weapon there from those that would try and get a free prop.
