If you want tools for the job that wont break the bank, I suggest Harbor Freight. I bough my heat-gun, dremil, and table saw from them with an approximate 6-year difference and they have never let me down :D

I actually did pick up a dremil and heart gun and so far I must say I am quite impressed with the quality for such a cheap price!

If you decide to go with foam then you can find a template, pin it onto a sheet and then you have a perfect silhouette all ready to go. Bigger weapons like the rifle benefit from having some kind of support inside, wooden dowels or some kind of pipe which can double as the barrel.

Look through Evil FX's blog about how he makes his M8s out of foam for ideas/inspiration.http://bioweapons.wordpress.com/2010/08/05/m8-assault-rifle-day-1/ part one of his M8 build
Thanks man this really helps!

More progress!!!

Still have a little more sanding to do, I'm not really sure on how to connect the pieces though and I'm a little baffled on how I'm supposed to make the shoulder, bicep, gauntlet and leg pieces.

Look through the forums for someone else who put together some N7 armour. Look through their builds for inspiration, and if you still have questions send them a PM. One guy that I know finished his suit is thehunter7. Check out his thread here.

The only advice I can give you is to experiment with hotglueing nylon or elastic straps onto the foam pieces. Hot glue is great to experiment with because you can heat it up with a hair dryer and it just melts off if you decide it needs adjusting.

Thanks! I've actually been using hughes, volpin, and evil fx for reference on my own build, but I will continue to look around for more builds from noobs like me.

Sorry about the lack of updates! I've been a little busy with some personal matters, but I'm back and I'm doing my best to get this build done ASAP. Over the next few days however I'll be in L.A. and therefore unable to work on this build, but I will be bringing a few things with me t work on my daft punk helmets! Anyways here are some update pictures:

Starting with the gloves:

Then onto the very small amount of work done on the back:

And then onto the gauntlet:

What kind of bending/shaping do you want? If you need a certain type of shape I can give you a quick tutorial or if you just need a circular/dome shaped piece let me know, I'll help as much as I can.

It's not so much problems with shaping as much as it is how the pieces go together. I've printed out the templates and cut them out into foam but I honestly have no clue how they connect or how they form I can't really show you at the moment since I'm in L.A. and I don't have my tools or supplies with me, but I could email the template.

Gentlemen I have returned with more photos! After a long leave mostly due to starting school again as well as several other time consuming things that have been weighing me down. Anyways it feels great to be back! I have a lot of ideas for projects plus I've been moving forward on this project as well! So I feel that since I haven't really updated since mid-june (wow it's really been a while) I will take the time to post some more photos outlining my process on this build!

So first off here's the oldest photo from when I got further on the back pieces:

This is more of that back piece, this part literally took me about 4 tries before I got it to a somewhat sufficient looking position:

This was taken more recently and shows an overview of the pieces in general:

As well as a few more overview photos:

And then finally the spine piece which I'm most proud of due to the fact that I don't have a laser cutter and I did all of these pieces by hand:

So that's what I have right now, but I will post some new updates as soon as they come.

Thanks,
~Alex

Whoa nice! Glad that I stumbled across this build, you have excellent foam crafting skills! Can't wait to see it sealed + painted.

Now, just remember to keep from being indoctrinated, so you don't give us the most abysmal ending of all time by your 3rd game eh?

You cut those details for the spine by hand?! They look amazing! Keep up the good work!

Also, do you have a deadline in mind for the project? There are never enough mass effect characters for Halloween...

I do plan to have it finished by halloween, but at the moment I'm having some problems with school so I've been having to take a break from this project. Next weekend however, I have 5 days off and 2 early let out days so I plan to get the bulk of everything done then.
