Evening Gentleman....

Well I had hoped for a update this evening... but our school server took a major dump and I spent
most of the day trying to correct our internet issues... major headache and major pain... So I will get
these taken care of this evening and get back to the build tomorrow.... hopefully....

Thanks for stopping in....

Cujo I have to say your assault rifles peaked my interest in foam, but now this and I've definitely decided to try foam with Hugh's files for my ODST. Once I'm done with exams anyways! What are you going to do for the helmet? Think foam could work for that as well? All in all, absolutely loving this!

awesome work man i am about to start the same thing in foam as well, do you have any tips on finding the right angels? or can you post the degrees you cut for us ?

Hey Braytak....

Let me see if I can explain this for you.... First off, I used the Kirrou Hinged ODST Shoulders... Before even starting with the foam, i scaled them up to my size AND I built the paper pep file FIRST... to give me a idea of both how it would look and to give me a template to go by with the foam...ESPECIALLY on the center diamonds/pyramids....

So let's look at the design:

shoulder_tute.jpg

1. On most of the folds that are just simple mountains or valleys, I found that either 15 or 30 degrees works really well.... for most of these I cut the pieces out with a 90 degree edge first... then put pieces next to each other and figured out the angle... then go back to my bandsaw and just rip the angle on the edge (if you stay right on the edge you won't shorten the piece... just cut off the angle).

2. Where I wanted "flaired" out edges instead of incut edges, I decided on the edge angle first before cutting them... Most of those were 30 degrees....

3. The inset hole in the center, I cut with just a exacto knife... flipped the piece of foam and inset it and glued it... pretty simple....

Now things to consider.... In Kirrou's file, he talks about using a bolt or two to make the hinge... I did that... but honestly if I was to redo them, I wouldn't... I think I would figure out how to use black nylon shoe strings instead... thread them thru the diamond and tie behind the plate... My thinking... it will let the flaps move easily... and would also allow you to switch out the guard plates on the shoulder pads....maybe making custom plates... or allowing you to give the armor a different look with just a simple switch out...

Just a thought though....

I must say that a lot of mine was trial and error... just eyeballing and finding angles that worked for me... just take your time and work thru it slowly.... I did the top sections first and got those the way I wanted... then the two center diamonds... then lastly the cover flaps.... I porbably had... oh... 7 to 8 hours in both shoulder plates....

Hope this helps some!

i wanna start mine but the band saw i have at work is missing a guide fence so its hard to keep the piece straight

nice job cujo. huge fan of your work and of kirrous pieces.
I like how you did it in foam, which will save you the toxic and dangerous pep-hardenin method. nice job. now you can be an odst with and Ma5c which makes sense.xD

Ok.... so we are moving on true believers :)

Shoulders are finished... (except for paint)

Working on shins now....

So me and "mini me" sat down with a ice cold "Carter" edition Mountain Dew
and pulled together the knee caps of our shin guards (see inset). We are working
off of Hugh's wonderful shin design (unwrapped by MKS81). Love the look of these shins!
I had to tweak them a bit but Hugh was very generous and helped me out.... Thank you sir!

Foam is hotglued... and edges were superglued then sanded... yes the raised panels are red...
because I ran out of black 1/4" foam :p Nope they won't be staying that color! hahahahaha :p

So here we go:

As always my friends, I look forward to your comments and critiques!

Evening all....

It was not that I was unmotivated tonight... I was... perhaps my tired mind was not in top gear.... but anyway...

I did manage to struggle thru and finish part of the lower left shin...

shin03.jpg

More red foam... I know.... took me a while tonight to get my act together
and make sense of what I was seeing... messed up a few attempts and
finally came up with this...

I have also decided that I am not a fan of the Wal-mart foam even though it is a better deal... the diamond tread interfers with the gluing and makes it hard to press flat and get a good seal... Will use up this batch of foam...but will definitely be going back to Harbor Freight hounds tooth pattern....

apologize for my crappy phone pix... will try harder next time!

Anyway.... will figure these things out yet....

Whatya suggest or think?

Cujo

i think its looking great , makes me kinda hate you lol jk, what are the thickness you are using

HATE ME? a lil harsh aren't you Braytak :p hahahahahaha

The main part of the knee cap is EVA 1/2 inch foam... the red accents are all 1/4 craft foam...

On the shin... I layered several pieces... combining the 1/2" foam with 1/4" craft foam to give me a thinkness of 3/4".... Maybe this will help:

Thanks again folks for looking at the thread....

Wow! This is looking great cujo! Looking forward to seeing your ODST completed. BTW, is that a Mega Blok's Halo figure? LOL! I have a few of those too.

Yes sir... that would be the ODST drop pod special in Blue/Silver... or we call him Mini Me :p My workdesk mascot.

Hey I was at Wal-mart last night and I noticed that they have these little foil packs....each come with a figure, weapon and base for $2.50... kinda live ballcards... you have no idea who you'll get... They have two series it seems... the ones I found were series one below:

431015.jpg

Each packet contains a mini Halo action figure, with a weapon, stand block, and collectors sheet. There are eight different figures to collect:

* Green Spartan with Plasma Sword
* Yellow Flame Marine with Flame Thrower
* Red Marine with Bazooka
* Green UNSC Pilot with SMG
* Purple Elite with Plasma Pistol
* Blue Hayabusa with Katana
* Green Elite with Plasma Sword
* Active Camo Spartan with Clear Assault Rifle

I picked up two for giggles... got the Green UNSC Pilot and the Purple Covenant Elite...

The foam looks fantastic. I would have never thought that foam armoring could look so great. Nice job. Keep up the good work.
