Hi all,

A while back I was told DP were playing glastonbury 2011 - and so in honour of that I decided to start some sort of robot meet at glasto (i'll post the link later for anyone going) and that i would build some sort of DP type outfit.

Well Daft Punk aren't playing, but meh, it's too late the meet up is booked and about 30 people are coming so far dressed as different kinds of robots. I was always going to do something simple but a bit different (I went as a pretty crappy elephant last year - with moving trunk and drinking straw).

But a mate found this forum, and decided we should make proper costumes. Build pictures below, I'll try to come back to do a proper build log as we go.

He's going for a proper as close as he can get type make, I'm going for a bit Tron, a bit of my own thing, adding blue lasers, led torches and EL piping around the helmet plus jacket and jeans:

Here the helmet on the left has been resined inside and out, mine had just been completed, started at 4pm on saturday (over easter bank hol) and was done by 10pm with 2 people sticking and cutting. It was really easy to build the second with a first to use to look at and also to place pieces over. The helmet on the left is a touch bigger, maybe 5 to 8% - which was a bit of an accident - that said mine is now a squeeze to get on!

Sorry for the huge pictures ;)

So that was when we had finished the paperwork bits. Then here is where we filled with fibreglass and finally added body filler and started sanding, which is where i am up to now, loads left to do.

Note - since I used a work printer the primer went black when I resined the helemt, my mate used a home printer and his didn't... anyway, in case you were wondering....

(obviously no padding so the last pic the helmet sits really wrong)

How's the Budweiser used during the fiberglassing? J/K I know exactly what it's for. It makes the job go that much easier. That's a nice looking helmet. Are you going to do a molded visor or just cut slits for the eyes? I'm honestly not that familiar with daft punk so I don't know how people normally do these.

Thanks, yes much bud, becks and scrumpy jack went into those helmets! It's been a long double bank holiday weekend here in the UK, so I started my helmet last Saturday (6 days ago) probably only spent about 10 hours on it so far.

We are going to build a vac table and vac form the visors - I am hoping to do a blue tint instead of black - as I'm going for a bit of an off the wall helmet. My mate is doing the full black, with proper light panels. We'll be using auto brake light tint to tint the visors - I'm a little worried about being able to see out - as I am wearing this for a music festival. I'm hoping I can put just enough on to look blue tinted when something black is behind, then mask all the visor with black / blue except for the eyes, and then black up a rectangle around my eyes with face paint. But we'll see, plenty to do before I get there!

Away this weekend, so won't be doing more work on this until Monday, but if anyone has any questions let me know.

BTW for UK builders - I just went to local auto shop and bought 'Stevens' body filler - there were two to choose from, I got the one /without/ the added fibreglass. Been pretty easy to use - the included putty spreader is a bit hard, but I'd also bought some silicone kitchen spatulas, and they were much softer and easier for doing the curves. 40 grit sand paper is what you really need to start the sanding - I ran out and even 60 grit is a pain for getting big lumps off - smooth as much as you can with spatulas, and then about 5 to 10 mins into setting use an old knife to scrape and shave off lumps.

Sorry all my images disapeared - my server host seems to have gone bust - so need to buy new rackspace. Anyway, build progressing nicely, still just sanding and working on the lights at the moment, planning where they all go...
