Taping and painting in progress.

I know it seems super lame to say this, but I honestly think that is one of the best helmets I have ever seen, and I don't even like EOD that much!

Thanks! That means a lot, seriously. If someone told me I'd be doing this well 5 months ago I would have laughed at the idea. I just love the details. And believe me, this bucket is less than perfect. But I still love it.

Agreed. It looks casted. Is that white primer?

Many thanks. The base color is white. I'm taping it off to add the black portions. More progress below.

So this happened. I'm pretty sure it's because I sprayed too heavily, and perhaps because the basement is a little cooler than optimal. Other than that, there's a chance the white paint/primer underneath is reacting to the black paint on top.

I'll sand it down tonight after work and apply another light coat to see what happens.

This happened to me when I used acrylic paint together with enamel. I'll try to locate the post someone gave me for what paints mix and which don't.

I did base coat Acrylic and then didn't realize that my top coat black was an enamel and the result was very similar to yours. The next day the black color actually faded away. If this is the case, sand the problem spot down and buy some black acrylic paint (most spray cans are acrylic, unless they say enamel).

Yep, that's exactly it. The black I used is enamel. Ugh. I should have tested first and I would have seen the reaction right away. I'm bummed because both sprays are the same brand.

Now the problem is that large portions of the satin black didn't wrinkle. It's like I can't spray either because now both are on the helmet. I need to figure out what to do that hopefully doesn't include removing all my painstaking taping and sanding the entire helmet down again.

The lower black section shows the reaction with the enamel. The upper section is acrylic over acrylic.

This is a test patch of black acrylic over the sanded enamel. You can immediately see the reaction on the edges.

Now that I've let it dry, I think the flat black is actually going to work. Which is fine because the satin was way too shiny for what I was going for.

All right people, about to begin what I'm starting to call a Workshop Session. Tonight's lineup:
  • Fix a magnet that came out during some field testing
  • Reinforce the neck seal of the helmet with bondo
  • Paint a few foam detail pieces that will attach to the neck piece
  • Repaint the visor hex pattern (it wipes off pretty easily)
Photos to follow.

The offending magnet.

Cut some grooves for a better hold.

Bondo.

The neck seal was very weak, almost nothing but paper and paint. This bondo should strengthen it up.

When painting small foam pieces, it is necessary to tape them down so the spray paint doesn't blow them away.

I'm using plastidip.

Here's my visor and a little secret to getting the hex pattern, thanks to my Cameo 3.

One pass of Rustoleum Mirror Effect does the trick. It's see through, but doesn't bind to plastic, so I may have to clear coat it if I like how it turns out. As mentioned earlier, it wipes off easily if another attempt is needed.

Project on hold as I pack in preparation to move. I've been living in this town house with three rotating roommates for nearly 5 years and it's high time I get my own place. Since the basement is my staging ground that means it's dysfunctional toward working on armor, but it's just a temporary setback.

Thank you so much for posting this Duke! I've had this happen to me a couple of times, but never could figure out why! Godwolfen the helmet looks great! Once you're done with the finishing work, this things going to look incredible.
