Hello all! if you've seen my "first" build you know I've got some experience with pepping. But it's so tedious. and somewhat more expensive. So I got some foam! It came on Saturday and I got to work instantly with my James S-247 build. Anyway, here we go! This first post will be reserved for status, pictures will start in the next post.

Picture time! So I got kind of excited and forgot to take pictures for large chunks of the helmet, but it still has some progress visible!

Day 1:

Foam arrived!

20141220_181606293_iOS.jpg

Templates cut out and ready to trace.
20141221_095550902_iOS.jpg

Hard to see, but everything traced onto the foam.

Day 2:

Pile of pieces! Starting to get somewhere.
20141221_194847069_iOS.jpg

I don't have a hot knife, but I have a wood burner with this attachment. It did not work. Switching back to Xacto.

Everything cut out!
20141222_014522792_iOS.jpg

Flattened helmet. It kind of looks cool.
20141222_022211806_iOS.jpg

Dome starting to shape up. I know it looks really narrow but it fixed itself later on.

This was really cool I thought. I had this little mesh left over from a bondo kit I used on a Captain America shield. Gives a bit of ventilation in the helmet!

Visor!
20141222_081137150_iOS.jpg

Chin!

The circle is now complete. When I left you I was but a Visor, now I am a helmet.

Well that's all for now! Thanks for looking and stay tuned for more! I'm gonna go to the Home Depot today and hopefully get some spackle to seal the edges of the helmet. I've got Plastidip waiting already, then I can lay on some primer!

I always like to see people posting that have collecting themselves and really started moving along. All looks well.

Also, I notice we have the same wood carving kit in the last pic, is the magnet that's suppose to hold them all in place as weak in your as it is in mine :unsure lol

Thanks! It's a little sloppy, being my first foam build, but I'm happy with it. The magnet itself works fine, but the adhesive that holds it in the case doesn't work at all, so every time I open it a magnet full of blades falls out!

^lol, essentially the same problem with mine, but just a shower of blades everytime i open it, haha

Those seams would clean up pretty well if you applied some caulk as a filler and sealed it all under a coat of something. Some of the best foam builds I've seen have resembled complete arse right before plastidip or a resin shell of some sort.
Looks especially good for your first run at foam, keep it up :thumbsup

Thanks again. I was planning on going the drywall spackle route like Spacemeat does. I'm heading to the Home Depot now, and I'm going for cost effectiveness right now, so I'll compare spackle and sillicone caulk. The caulk would be a bit more flexible I'd imagine..

UPDATE:
Edges are sealed and the helmet is sanded smooth. Later today I'll carve a few details then Plastidip the whole thing. I'll post some pictures after the hollidays!

UPDATE:
All the details are carved into the helmet now. Well I should say burned. Also, I need to make clear the danger of burning EVA foam. It releases toxic fumes when melted, so PLEASE do this in a well ventilated space AND wear a respirator. I opened a window and stuck a fan blowing straight out it and burned right next to the fan, and still got a headache within minutes. I didn't wear a respirator and am regretting it now. Anyway, I'm going shopping with my parents, then when I return I'll hit a few spots with spackle, sand again, then Plastidip! Picture dump coming soon!

UPDATE:
I got home too late to plastidip, so I assembled the chest plate of the torso and edge sealed it. I'm going to go ahead and coat it when I do the helmet, I have a plan for the torso as a whole to make it modular for easier putting on/taking off. When I do a pic dump I'll share that diagram too.

here is the twin plate i did a while back ,but it is not unfolded for foam. i dont know how to. maybe you can edit it or have some one else do it for you. either way your build looks good so far and good luck on your build. it is good to see a planned out build.

Thanks! I may be able to convert it. I've never really tried. I had to pull some parts out of the torso that were missing though so we'll see.

UPDATE:
Three layers of plastidip on the helmet and the chestplate. Going to see family for Christmas now. Those will dry overnight, then tomorrow is supposed to be 50 degrees so hopefully I can lay down some primer. Pics soon! Promise!

UPDATE:
Got the primary color painted and taped off the secondary. I also got a visor for the helmet at a local atv shop for 13 bucks. It needs to be trimmed, can anyone tell me the best way to trim/mount a visor? Thanks!

UPDATE:
Secondary color is applied. It wasn't quite thee color I was expecting, but I'm ok with it. It was a little too cold to spray paint today, so it got a little "spiderwebby" but I'm making it work with the weathering. I've got some scratches and drybrushing done, and need to blackwash the whole thing soon. Then just some detail painting, visor mounting, and padding!

UPDATE:

So Sunday I go back to college, so this build will be put on hold for awhile. Tonight I'm going to finally put in the visor and pad the helmet. Then it will be finished! I'll post the pictures after I settle back into the dorm for the spring semester. Stay tuned!

Very cool man. You're making the helmet entirely from foam? How'd you go about that?

I'm not really sure how to explain it other than looking at the pictures. I cut out all the pieces and hot glued them together, then sealed the helmet with plastidip, and painted it. The visor is a motorcycle visor cut to shape and epoxied into place.

It looks really great. I was just wondering if there was some base besides the foam, as I'd assume the foam would not be rigid enough to maintain the shape of the helmet.

THIS IS MY 50TH POST!
What a special milestone. I am no longer a New Recruit! What better way to celebrate my "promotion" than with the Picture Dump! Yay!

Nope. EVA foam is pretty solid stuff!

UPDATE!

It's here! The Picture dump you've all been waiting for! Let's-a go!

Ready for Spackle! Make to use Patch n Paint! This stuff is super light and slightly spongy when dry so it flexes with the foam.

Secondary color on the chestplate. Not the exact color I was hoping for, but I'm still ok with it. Krylon Bahaus (spelling?) Gold. Weathering too.
