Hi everyone, new to 405th, so be patient, lol. A friend has asked me to build him the metro-cop combine helmet from half life, i've made some good progress so far and i've actually be taking photos this time so i thought i'd post up what i've done so far and get some feedback hopefully :D

these is my main reference photos

mainly making this out of thin eva foam with elements in resin. I'm planning to put resin over the top to sand smooth before painting.

did most of the main structure in one go with the eva foam and shoe glue (nice and flexible)

then added some more detail and used a paper template to get the size for the circular thingies.

for the circular thingies, i did a 3d model using wings (i find it a lot simpler than other programs)

then i got it 3d printed, pretty happy with how it turned out actually, only cost about 30 bucks to print too :D
unfortunately you can't see a lot of the insane detail i put into it with my crappy photos...

then to save on costs, i made a latex mould and made some resin duplicates, aren't as good as the original as i'm still new to casting and resin (as in, this is my first ever attempt after the resin came in the mail 30 mins beforehand, lol) but once they are painted they should be good :D

as you may have noticed i'm putting a lot of effort into the back, thats because my friend in just going to use the russian gas mask the combine helmet was based on for the front.

i know its not really the same but this is his costume, not mine, lol. i might make my own front of the helmet for myself later but atm i'm just focussing on the back.

at this stage i'm really just waiting for him to buy the gas mask so i can do a fitting with him and the mask before i start putting resin everywhere.

whats everybodies opinions so far? i'm open to any feedback :) as long as it doesn't involve me starting again, cause i really can't be bothered, lol. does anyone have any advice for what i'm going to use to cover the eva foam? i was going to use some sort of resin and paint it on but after doing a test with a polyurethane resin, it's way too thick and annoying to sand and it made the surface of the test foam even rougher. i could try polyester resin, thats a bit thinner but i was hoping for something sprayable so i can get a nice smooth even coat... any advice?

Wow... just wow, thats a seriously impressive scratch build! :D there arent many foam helmets around here so kudos! im just concerned that resin might eat into the foam? Ive heard from people that that happens and i dont wanna see a great build ruined :(

yeah the polyester resin is nasty stuff... i'd like to avoid using that all-together simply because it stinks my house out, lol. But thanks heaps :D

I'm really loving this, seeing as Half-Life 2 is probably my favorite game of all time, so far at least *cough* Halo 4 *cough*. It looks really accurate, just a great job all around!

Thanks Road Kill and SpartanRogue1, the client is buying the mask soon so hopefully i should have some more progress soon :)

the 1 half life thing i've wanted to do 4 a long time is the head hopper things

lol the headcrabs? you could always make do with one of these beanie things... :p
