Helmet surface detail.

As of now i have finished my sculpt of master chief helmet. But before i start molding i want to have one thing cleared out of my mind.

How do you make the surface of the armor (In 3ds max: Noise bumb map for example) so that the surface will have detail and wont be smooth.

Do i do it after or before casting the mold?
 
depends if you want the texture in every molded helmet... best thing in my opinion would be to cast it smooth, and if you want rough surface finish, use a hammer paint, or a textured paint as a base layer, and spray color over it after the fact.
