How do I join a regiment?

So I just got on the site recently sence I was just at Twin Tiers comic con and I met a few guys from the 405th there, and so I came on the site and saw the regiments so I have two questions what are the regiments persay like what is their purpose and two how would I join a regiment such as the Colonial Regiment sence I live in new york and some of the states listed on the Colonial Regiment is New york. If anyone has any answers to help me I would highly appreciate it.
