Looking For Some Criticism

Superb attention to detail.

Be careful of warping when in the bondo phase.

Look out Spase, we've got a contender on our hands! :)

Ya it's a DF4L helmet. Since I was pretty new to pep. I thought I'd use a medium difficulty model. I'm pretty good at bondo since I've had lots of experience throughout my costuming career. I didn't scale it up at all since the measurements were near dead on after my size test helmets so I left it as is. Thanks for the input especially about being Spase's contender. That was a boost. I've never cast anything but who knows. I like to try new things so I may try it out. Maybe on something else first though. I'll definitely take my time, I was gifted with great patience so I never rush stuff and I'm going to try and make it as accurate as my attention to references will let me.

New pictures. If you see anything that seems incorrect please bring it up for consideration. I want this thing to be ripped apart by everyone. Here's my question to everyone who bothers to look. Are the ridges to thick?

I think the ridges are fine. You've done a very good job on this. Keep at it and keep us updated.

ohhhhhhhhhh myyyyyyyy.... this is looking awesome, what color are you thinking?

Once it's finished I think I'll hold a vote for the color scheme. I can't decide myself so I figure I'll leave it up to everyone else.

WOW.... That's one of the nicest helmets I have ever seen! :not worthy: Its so clean and perfect, especially the bondo job. It's absolutely fantastic! Quick question though, how did you get those ridges in the bondo? I'm working on mine and I would love to have detail like that. Keep it up man, I'm extremely interested in your future progress. :)

Alright Chris, thanks for the comment. Basically my tip for bondo lies with the tools you use. The ridges for example were built in several stages using a sharp knife (I use my leatherman) and a spreader. I drew out the pattern on the top of the helmet with a pencil then with a marker when i got the right curve. I then added a THIN (1/8th of an inch) layer over the line. I don't know if anyone else does this next part but it is a life saver. Once the bondo is semi-hard (that point where you want to sand it really bad but know you shouldn't because its only just set) use the knife to start shaving the bondo in thin layers until you hit the line. Finish off getting the shape you want and let it finish drying. When you add the next layer of bondo you can then use the spreader to get the nice ridge look. Just add bondo and use the edge of the spreader to follow the thin ridge and it should give you the same shape. Then of course you'll have to go over a couple more times to fix imperfections. So all in all: rough it out then make it pretty. I hope you understand what I said and be careful with the knife. PM me if you need anything else.

I do something similar... I'll draw out the line I want, then run 3/4" tape against it, then go over it again with 2". That way, when the bondo starts to kick off, i can just pull the tape line and have a little trim work/sanding to do. If you pull the tape down and away from your line, it leaves a little overhang, which i'll then shave off with a pocket knife or x-acto blade.

Nice helmet, btw.

only thing I see possibly wrong with it is that the lip that runs along the side of the brow section tapers as it goes back to the rear, above the cheek box. see this. The spot right above where the visor ends. As for the ridges, the look pretty spot on, but the lower half moon section may be a little large, IMO. Then again, the insert hasn't been molded in yet.

You know when I started out, I used Danni's file and that was my first time using Bondo for anything and I couldn't think of a way to get those ridges, but after I started work on my own armor and also a few more helmets, that is actually what I do now. Before I would use about 7 layers of building up and sanding down but now its like 2 layers and I am done. But I envy you since you did have earlier work on your Clone armor, specially getting it seamless, so everything should be easy from here on!! Sheesh, you won't even have to ask how to add straps to the MC armor!!

Now I feel like going back and re-doing another one of Danni's helm files!! LOL

Good job and keep it up!!
