You cant vacuum form any type of clay directly with hot plastic, it will melt, clay is clay and will melt with heat. I tried this before and ruined what I created, dont make the same mistake.

You will need to plaster mold it to vacuum form.

This is for stormtroopers, but it shows how to plaster mold armor pieces

Dont pt everyone down you are being just a 'faq' guy who thinks you know everything!!!

Water based clay can be vacuum formed!!!!!!!!
You do know that water based clay is put to a kiln about 700celsius degrees hot (about 1300 fahrenheits). to get the clay turn hard!!!
It can be cacuumformed and it cant melt if it gets too hot it will crack and if theres a supernova somewhere it will turn into dust. it will nott melt!

Not to be rood or anything it just annoys me that you always think you know everything!

EDIT: i would also like to notice that you will have cracks forming into the water based clay as it dryes in your paper helmet, you cannot add more WED clay to the cracks because it wont attach and will cause more cracks.

NZTK proved it can withstand heat, but not pressure. I may have been wrong about water based clay earlier, but atleast I know water based clay to keep smoothness it must stay moist, if dry and hard, it cracks.

And if moist, it is pliable and will take any shape pressed upon it, 5-6HP even 3hp of pressure being sucked down upon it will warp the carved piece.

Hey, Thoren, are you still using Marblex self-hardening clay for this? If you are, you might want to scoop out some clay from the middle of the mold. That big of a piece will dry out on the surface weeks before the center drys, and then the surface would crack. You probably only want a 1-2 inch layer of clay so that it drys evenly

It should completely dry in 24 hours.. but the areas touching the paper will crack because the clay doesnt stict to it... and it ends up cracking.

you guys are all yelling at frost, hes just trying to help, i dont mind doing the extra steps for caution i want my armor to look awesome, and i am having a blast doing this part, whats to say i wont on the next parts? yeah im still using marblex i couldnt get my ceramics teacher to give me any clay lol, i might scoop some out of the middle later but i figure if i leave it in it will have less chance of deforming while its still wet with a solid center. as for drying it is going at a controlled state and not cracking as of yet, hopefully nothing to bad will ever happen if im careful?

here are some pics enjoy!

these 2 are pics of it just being pulled out of the paper

and these are after a bit of smoothing and detailing, i am gonna do more tommorow, and maybe some more today.

well i plan to make a plaster cast from these so i dont think ill have to worry about the center not being dry, its not going to be touching the paper i pulled it out as you can see. and i am attempting to slow down the drying process so cracks dont form that i cant fix. right now it is sitting inside of two plastic publix bags. it was sitting that way since i put the clay in yesterday and it isn't completely hard yet, but it is not as soft either, yes the clay did stick to the paper lol i had to peel a bunch of pieces off actually. the whole experience is actually turning out quite entertaining. this sort of stuff could provide me with hours of entertainment! thanks for the comments so far i appreciate all the help you get on this site ^^

now im gonna go play assassins creed cuz i just got it in the mail, hope its good :p

That looks very very nice! Good work on it, cant wait to see how it works out when you get to the vacuum forming part.

thank you! i cant wait till i get to the actual vac forming part either! as soon as we get the few pieces needed to finish my table im gonna get right to work! i still have to do a whole other half of the helmet first and make the plaster casts then i can stick the clay mold on my desk as a trophy of sorts,
