Hello, I've been looking into getting a costume for Chicago's wizard world comicon in august 2017, I'm not artistic in almost every way, so I've been contacting people on etsy looking for sombody to build me a suite, I found a gentleman who can craft my halo reach armor, with the only difference of a recon helmet (image below) the suite would cost me around $1600 + cost of a under suite, mask and a weapon. I'm loosing weight right now to fit the bill, I'm 5'11 and weigh 208 pounds, lost around 7 pounds in just over two weeks. So I have time to get into shape, and make enough money for this. Please let me know what you guys think. And please look at it where I do, I make quite a bit of money trading on CSGO and selling games on G2A which is how I'll be funding this. If I sold out all my CSGO stuff and used the money for g2a, I can pay for it now. I'm only 18 years old, so purchasing this suite is no small thing. I'm just wondering if it's worth the price. I would be wearing it at least once a year. And would buy a manikin for the rest of the time. Just let me know what you guys think I should do!

What is the person using to make it?

Welcome to the 405th by the way!

All he said was fiberglass, when I was looking into making my own a few years ago, there was fiberglass and resin combo, I'm guessing that's what he's doing, I could be wrong though. Halo recon helmet and upper armour set that's the gentleman building it, and close to what he would be making. I'm not a huge fan of the knife on the chest though.

If is fiberglass and custom built to your size then I would say yes, it is probably worth the price. I would talk him into including a gun for that price though. Even just a foam dmr or something. And don't dismiss the undersuit. It can be a challenge to make one and just wearing black underneath I think really takes away from the detail and awesomeness of the armor. And when you say mask, do you mean visor? He should definitely make your visor.

You may not get the same response as people posting about things they are building themselves, but I encourage you to post about your suit when you get it. There is still going to be some modifications and paint I am sure you will add to make it your own and people will love to hear about it. Or even just your experience in having it made for you. Plus everyone loves those completed Spartan photos!

Good luck, Tuckle!

I talked to him some more, visor is included, my bad in calling it a mask. For standard recon armor it would cost $1150 with shipping. I've seen people use black motorcycle suites for the black under suite. I don't know if I should go with the custom build, seeing I don't know if his quality would be better on stuff he's already done. I understand what you mean by others when they build their own. I'm the same way with computers, however not everybody has the skill to make high quality costumes. I plan on posting about it, however it will be around four months until I get it. And for the rifle, I'm considering just buying a m6 pistol from reach. If you have any advice on where I can get the under suite that would be great! Thank you for all the support!

Does the gentleman offering to make your armor have any pictures of previous work? You dont want to spend a pile of money on a suit that doesnt look good. The price might seem like a lot, but when someone is putting a ton of time into creating an armor set, take their hourly work into account. This is one of the main reasons I haven't done any commission work. Take my SAW for example. It is game accurate, but made of EVA foam, and took me a good 45 -50 hours to create. At a mere $20/hr , that's roughly $1000. That being said, I know a large number of costume makers seriously short change themselves when doing commissions, just be wary of the quality you might receive!

Yeah but think of the currency conversion........and the cost of getting stuff over/under the wall. Mules are hard to find that can get stuff this large across the boarder.......oh wait...that's some other stuff.........Maybe your right PerniciousDuke.....getting ripped off.

Dirtdives We prefer to use moose and polar bears up here... far larger carrying capacity XD . PerniciousDuke To each their own on charging rates! Like i said, that's simply why i stay away from commissions myself. I look at it like i look at my personal business. I do specialty custom metalwork and woodwork, which is based on skills which i have been improving and learning for the last ten years. There are other people who can create the same things that i can, but they have put the same amount of time and money into learning and tools, and it's not something that the average person can pick up over night. I look at costume building the same way. I like to think i was a little ahead of the game when i started out, due to my previous experience in constructing things, so my first suit turned out extremely well (in my personal opinion, feel free to disagree lol). It still took me a good 450-500 hours to create. I now have that experience under my belt, which will speed things up, but it was a great learning experience, and I like to think of that time as an investment. Now it doesn't make sense to me to charge far less than minimum wage to create something that is very specialised, and that i have put a ton of time into.

Enough of my ranting, though, lol. To the original poster, wondering if its a reasonable deal, $1600 is very good price for a set of custom armor.

Yeah, FlyinPhil I'm with you, both on how good your suit came out as well as your view on work rendered. No wonder you're the Marketplace Sup. :) I was joking with my comment earlier. The main difference is that other people actually try to make money at it, where as I am still in the learning stage so if I can break even and still learn then I am happy. Once I finish my suit I'll be right there with you. (y)

i agree with you if your gonna take the time money or effort to make halo armor dont skimp on the under suit! it really takes away!!
