Hey guys, I'm here to introduce myself as well as ask for help. I've been trying to research the armor building topic but I've had a few problems. Mainly I'm looking for the correct place to start because I see there are many methods to the armor crafting, from what I've seen there is the hardcore fiberglass path(which I don't understand) and there's the pepakura path (which I also don't understand). I hope to be able to build a pretty decent ODST set, a nice and solid one that isn't made of cardboard...

Really I'd just like to know where to start looking that'll teach me how to do this.

Alot of people start with Pepakura files, print them out and use them as a base for their projects by hardening the 110 lb paper with polyurethane resin and covering that with bondo or rondo (mixture of resin and bondo) to smooth out the rough edges. If you want to start with Pepakura look at the tutorials and use the search function to get great threads for information.

I've lurked around the forum for awhile and recently made an account. My best advice for you is to do the same, Lurk and learn. Go through the tutorials, the threads read the posts, read up on how some people do their resining and how others do paint.

Fiberglass is easy. You just take the pepakura and resin to hold it shape. the put fiberglass on the INSIDE only, do a little detaing, paint and done.

This is how i leaned, maybe it will help you.

good luck

Alright thanks guys, the pepakura and fiberglass idea sounded nice since I had seen this video

I'm going to keep looking through the forums and at video's like this and hopefully by next week I'll have an idea of how this works.

Usually it's polyester resin, not polyurethane resin.

I imagine you'd have to use a PUR-based body filler to make rondo with PUR-resin, right?

I must have read something wrong somewhere(seeing the poly and thinking urethane).

What are the differences between the two types?

I'm new myself and have just started a project. ( look at my threads from my profile if you wanna see the progress) I started off like these guys said above with 110lb cardstock and pepakura designer 3. I gotta say...if you can get past the monotonous cutting and scoring of the paper the rest is a cakewalk! i'm practically ready to sand/paint and detail my first helmet. But my best advice would be to READ READ READ. i don't know how many mistakes i would have had to make if i didn't take my time and LOOK at all the information there is to be found on this website.

Good luck and post a progress thread if you can!

It's a bit hard to sum up in a few sentences. They are different chemicals to start with, and depending on how they're mixed up and produced and whatnot, the resulting material can be very similar - or totally different.
