Some people also talk highly of dry wall putty. While it might not stand up to impact damage like auto body repair material, it's advantage is the fact that it is MUCH easier to sand (and, of course, not toxic).

I use drywall putty to fill in small imperfections and smoothe over irregularities with water in a spray bottle
