i didnt read everyones post but i do agree the old stuff is better. reson in the older days we could watch everything without some new mother or rich mother complaining about it. now adays i have to deal with that with childeren of all ages.. the tv shows arent ment for parents. but then again what is now adays. you cant swear on tv. you cant watch good old shows that promote good things other than watching the same repeative thing every day... i find watching anything on family chanel after 3 episodes its just become the same thing.. this guy has a girl problem we fix it... this girl has a boy problem fix that too.. episode 3 oh they both have a problem fix that and repeat. anyone remember the good days of ninja turtles and transformers when tv was real. and wasnt all wine about this and that.. yea those were good. the old tv show make people want to go to school and be creative.. now adays i turn on my tv and afterwards its not only me that wants to go out and destroy stuff just because its everyone else in the house to... why cause what we watched SUCKED!



go back to the old ways. stop being so sensitive about tv... stop crying... and stop makeing everyone dumb... tv to me has died about 3-4 years ago. i watch movies now. only movies... the ocasional mythbusters, or something cool on discovery planet. but otherwise ill stick with the internet for now. if you want an uncensored good tv experience buy good chanels or get an internet tv service where you can pick what you want to watch. personally when i have kids i hope their tv shows havent been dumbed down to. this is a spoon and you put it in the dishwasher. yay thats all for today you 8 year old kids... kids sitting on the couch with pots on their heads going... duhhhhh. yea not my kids.

edit: ok so i read a bit here and their and i stand by my word... older cartoons and shows were the best bring bak ren and stimpy and that other one... angry beavers, funny and educational, with some pain involved... education hasnt really dwindled in canada. but with the tv programing not chalengeing the imaginations in our scociety we have not much to look at. most of the high schools i have tauaght at since 2006 have changed from smart kids to gangster rags and poor brain capacitys. so yes in a way tv and music is pushing our future kids into drugs, sex, gang relations, why because most times they havent been chalenged mentally.



anyone watch that movie with that group of detention kids that was no good and the teacher who supervised them and made them dance? whats it called...ahh take the lead yes now that was a good movie. did this with a computer course of pretty smart kids pooled their talents did some after school things and raised 4000$ for the new computer lab they needed. most of those kids made movies and whatnot. hotdog fundraiser and the like. sure some of them were as dumb as a log but once i chalenged them they got out of their stuck groove and went for something new.. one guy said " teach im no good with numbers and stuff but i want to help and i can draw!" bam he draws what everyone can think of and were off.



schools need not just these movies but more support and teachers who will chalenge the students with things like they used to. teachers these days are lazy and dont care anything about students except grades. myself i dont mark students on work they do. i mark them on percipitaion, fun, and creativity... sometimes it isnt the best way to work but you also need to know your students.



no offence to anyone in the usa but the governement needs to stop supporting their army and start supporting the schools more. 1billion for all the schools is nothing compaired to the 43 billion for army. anyways thats my rant. if anyone wants to say army needs support go ahead. they do. but they dont need new equiptment every year if one tank breaks down doesnt mean they need to buy 12new ones. so yea.

While I agree somewhat, What about these teachers? I'm not bashing teachers, but MANY of them are overpaid for what they do. My dad is a pilot, and one of his buddies got layed off. (before my dad got axed. Fortunately, he just got a job) He was teaching part-time in a middle-school. He was making a pretty penny for sub-work. He still got paid more aas a pilot, but there are teachers going on strike for money, trying to get raises, etc. My friend goes to the high school part-time (he's homeschooled) and he constantly tells me all his teachers are lazy bums. They just read out of a book and assign homework. Our education system could be much better, and we HAVE to keep military strength up, otherwise these other countries like China will catch up. Also, where are you getting your figures? We spend over 150 billion on schools every year. Grants, funds, and other discretionary spending. True, we spend about a trillion a year on the military, but we don;t just spend a billion a year.



EDIT: and yeah, ya gotta buy 12 new tanks... They all go in single-file, and whenever 1 breaks down, the others scavage for parts. When they get to the engagement zone, only 1 will be left. Made by the lowest bidder...

As you all may be right about television and education dropping from 10 to 20 years ago to now is correct, but you all have to remember that the tests are getting harder and the kids are learning faster. When my mom was in 11th grade she was just learning fractions, I learned that in 5th grade I think, and now my 1st grade nephew already knows fractions. The scores are not saying we are getting more stupid, it is most likely saying we are getting bored of learning new things faster. My 3 year old nephew already knows how to sound out his words and he knows how to tell time (analog and digital). I didn't know how to do that forever and I still hate telling analog time. As purrie said, our attention span is getting smaller but thats just because we are getting bored.



Now on to television, majority of the television is nonsense and immaturity but it's the parents fault to allow their kids to watch all that garbage. My 3 year old nephew watches team umizumi and mickey mouse play house and all those other garbage (the only reason I say garbage is because we have DVR and he records the ones he likes and watches them over and over again) learning shows. He isn't even allowed to watch fairly odd parents because something about disrespect.



Now don't get me wrong my family are no geniuses. My mom dropped out of school to take care of us and out of 8 brothers and sisters only 2 went to a community college. I was no honor student either, but we teach our children as we were taught.



PS: I am already teaching my 3 year old nephew how to take apart and put together my spare computer. Oh and you don't even need money for our ways...

I once had a friend, who was the smartest kid in school. Both his parents were teachers, and they both "supported" him night and day. He never lived his childhood. All he did was duty and study and study. The result? Best grades, and very immature behavior. He was acting like a stupid kid during the breaks breaks. Why? Because he hadn't lived his childhood. He hadn't grown up. So, I disagree with what you say. Kids don't learn faster. They are forced to learn for various reasons. Mainly, because their parents want the smartest kid, or because that's what their parents did. They happens in most advanced countries nowadays. Teens and adults (consumers) who are both smarter and dumber at the same time. You watch tv when you have free time. And people are immature in their free time, so show some immature stuff and bang! you got yourself an audience.

Maybe you didn't understand what I was trying to say. I was comparing 20 years ago to now. When did you start reading? Now when one first enters K-Grade they are required to know how to spell their name address and phone number. My sister is not trying to make my nephew the smartest kid in the class. She is trying to prepare him for school so he is not struggling. Another thing is my nephew is one of those people that just want to learn then to go and be immature with the rest of the kids, sure he plays games; he got a 297 in wii sports bowling (I know it is not relevant but just saying he does play not just study). FYI, Kids do learn faster then adults, just the attention span is shorter.

This brings up another point, where are the teachers, why are parents suppose to teach their children how to read and spell, and count before they enter kindergarten, when I was starting school that is what they taught in kindergarten.

This is wrong. Children are supposed to learn in school, not know things already. This beats the purpose of school itself. It probably began with some parents teaching their kids in advance to impress the teachers, and then slowly everyone was forced to do it to withstand the competition. Heh, I just remembered Sammy's mom from "Yes dear". It was a good show, and it pretty much comments and compairs two different ways to raise children.

Parents are supposed to lead by example, teaching thier children right from wrong, smart from stupid, teach them as well as having the school teach the child as well. One example of this is my 6 year old brother was watching Flapjack ( which he is not supposed to watch ) and the main character in one scene was eating flowers, now I wonder from that one little scene how many little kids will try to eat things like the characters eat and get sick from it. A lot of things wrong with today as well is that television is showing that pain is funny, one of the things I have noticed is a person will fall or get hurt in a real life example and others around will laugh.

2. I don't have a child, I live in Hellas (aka Greece). School here is very opressive for teens, and leaves little to no free time. As for children, I've heard from teachers that many parents actually ask them to put tons of homework on the kids' backs, so that they won't be bothering them (let me note here that I find cruel and disgraceful for a parent to even think like that). As for address etc, these are basic things.

Interesting. It's funny, I am actually homeschooled myself, so I can't comment on what teaching is like in school, but whenever I hang with public schoolers, it quickly becomes clear to both sides that, frankly, I've had the better education. It leads me to wonder what's getting taught in schools, if anything. It seems to me that, in order to be all-inclusive, schools pass anyone and everyone so long as they show up to class. Whether or not they learn anything is beside the point.

I can't say if this is a byproduct of a stupid-er generation or the cause. Its just sickening for me to look at my younger brother's friends and see what complete and total IDIOTS they are. And God forbid you actually try to learn something, you wouldn't want to have the "geek" tag slapped on you. I swear that when I walk past my brother's circle of firends I can feel the stupidity hanging in the air. When I hear the kind of books they're reading, if they read anything at all, and I compare it to what I was reading at that age, it's just sad. So in summary, I don't know whether it's poor schools or even worse TV that causes it, but the kids growing up behind us are definitely dumber. I for one try to do my part to get my younger brother do something with his life, instead of sitting on the couch daydreaming about the latest movie. I tell him every day he needs new friends.



CommanderFluffy, I respect your opinion, but I disagree. Spending more money on education is not the answer. I live in CT, and we just passed a bill that put millions, if not billions (I forget the exact number, but it was ridiculous), of dollars toward state education because we habitually are one of the dumbest states in the Union. All that money did nothing, we are still one of the dumbest states in the Union. Throwing money at the problem will not fix it, changing the way we teach might. Whatever you do, don't cut funding to the military. Read "Ambush Alley" or "Joker One" if you think our guys are crawling in gear and and whenever a tank breaks down we have two more in reserve. In Ambush Alley, out of a 14-tank unit, when they got the tanks for deployment, 12 were DOA, requiring a massive overhall to get back in fighting shape, that had be performed on board ship on the way to the sandbox. Even then, the tanks were held together with duct tape and chicken wire (figuratively) and continually broke down. In Joker one, one platoon was issued one ACOG scope. Thats a lot of guys using iron sights on the rifle that's supposed to keep them alive.

Money in the schools is not the problem. It is the way the money is spent. Last year my school purchased roughly a hundred heart rate moniters for at least $120 each. They don't work and are just wasted because if you are within 15 feet of another person you will pick up their heart too. With overcrowding it is impossible not to be within 15 feet of another person. The other day in math class all the protractors were barely working. With the money that should have been spent on important things like protractors the schools are buying technology that is actually taking away from learning not helping it. This isn't to say the schools don't need money. Illinois owes my school district hundreds of thousands of dollars. Teachers have been pretty blatant that there will be massive cuts next year. A lot of things in the education system need reform.

@Nintendude: Shows like Flapjack and Chowder DO annoy most people, but alot of kids like it. You cant just say you hate 3 TV channels out of the thousands that can be accessed. If you jast CANT bare to watch it, move your hand 3 inches to change the channel to something else, Dont just bash some the show that you dont like. Dont tell me that youre going to make thousands of little kids unhappy, just cause you dont like the show that's on? And I dont know if the "write a letter" thing was a joke or not, but either way it's not funny. Cartoon Network and the companies that make those shows are so huge and full of money, that they would crumple the letter up and throw it right in the garbage can without reading any words past "Cancel Chopwder and flapjack, cause I hate them"



And stop calling them stupid, a lot of people make a lot of money from the millions of kids that view them every day. Where's your show that makes you millions of dollars hmm? Never seen Nintendude it the credits of anything.



Anyway, cartoons like Looney Toons and Tom and Jerry arent allowed on a channel like cartoon network, and if youre all as grown up and adults as said, then you know how to use a remote, just skip past the cartoons, I know for a fact that not even I want to watch cartoons anymore. Oh, the looney toons/tom & jerry thing. Those shows contained a lot of things like cigarettes, death, alot od religious things, and sometimes vulgarity that parents dont want children to watch them. So the fact their parents would rather have their children listen to farting and screams is a good step up from letting them watch a cat get crushed by a grand piano that a mouse and his bird friend pushed down the stairs. Just leave it alone and change the channel.



It's really not a our concern what they put on TV for 10 year olds, now is it?

I can feel that at my high school. And I wear my "geek" tag proudly, thank you (granted I'm lazy when it comes to school work: I barely try and I get A's and B's... maybe even a freak C+, and can memorize vocabulary in 5 minutes). Some people who don't don't act smart seem get the A's. Heck, there's one guy at my school who rarely comes to school anymore because his place as Valevictorian has been cemented (won't even be going to an Ivy-league school, too, such a valuable waste of carbon).

In CP physics, the last 2 weeks before final projects the physics teacher (who is awesome) lets us choose 2 subjects to study, here were the choices:

Quantum Physics (like schrodinger's cat)

Astronomy

The Physics of Sports

Relativity

Quantum Physics & Astronomy eventually became the choices, because many thought that Quantum Physics would yield no homework, and that learning about the stars would be easy (and the promise of a "Star-B-Q").



Our Physics teacher (lot's of stupidity in his classroom for some reason) installed Windows XP computers (A big deal, we're a Mac school) at the end of January. Just now some of the students are noticing.

I'm tired of people without common sense. They are being taught academics, sure, but no common sense. We live in an age where information is easily acessable, but there is still ignorance. Every time I go to school I swear I loose IQ points. The only way I can gain them back is by working on awesome stuff, like armor

I could have been pushed to go skip a few grades, but my parents wanted be to have a childhood and a social life- some social life: play halo for 6 hours at school every Friday and make Halo Armor. All well, at least I was a spartan at the last Halloween Dance, and have a bajillion cool hobbies!



There is one thing that I learned: Humans have great potential, its just humans are illogical, unpredictable, self-contradicting things. The stupid reproduce like mad and sponge off the system, and the smart do not because they know better than to have a zillion kids.

When I look at the world, I sometimes see why the Covies would hate humans.

It needs to be changed....................................................................................... before its too late.
