Hey gang, wanna pick everyones minds on the best material to use for sculpting, while using a resined pepakura model.

I am building a grunt costume for my son and have made a few of the pieces in pepakura. Now the model this was based off is a very low poly count model, so its not very detailed. My plan is to start sculpting the details over top, but I am unsure of a good material to use.

I am considering using Crayola Model Magic (its cheap), but am concerned it won't stick to the fibreglass resin, so it will delaminate.

Has anyone found a good light weight sculpting material that will stick to fibreglass resin?

Thanks!!

Magic sculpt is what I use. Just look for an epoxy based clay. It's pretty strong stuff.

Thanks for the heads up on that. Does that material weigh much? Also does it go very far, as it seems kind of expensive.

Do you need to prep the resin in any way to make sure the clay sticks to it?

Thanks. :)

When it dries, the weight seems to stay the same. So, if you use 1/4th lb, then it should weigh about 1/4th of a pound. BTW, I bought the 5lb tub to use with my build and haven't even made a dent in it yet. It's great for details. The weight really depends on how much you will use. If you sculpt something like a gun out of this stuff, it will be a tad heavy. I would recommend (to reduce weight) using planters foam to build up certain areas and then cover it with magic sculpt or bondo (Cheaper), then go over it with the magic sculpt to fine tune it.

Thanks for the advice. I've looked around, and there seems to be only one place in Calgary that sells magic sculpt, and of course they are only open while I'm at work. :p
