Ok before anyone jumps to google, i have done a search and yes i have some results. But the sites that i saw don't look very trustworthy so the question goes to anyone who has bought it, where did you get it from? If you havn't bought it, i don't need patronizing on how search is my friend.

Thanks in advance.

SmoothCast 300 is a product of SmoothOn.

Smooth On Link

SmoothOn Site is very trustworthy. Or any of their affiliates are as well like Reynolds.

http://www.reynoldsam.com/ is the best place sir. They are Fast, friendly, and have good communication.

I'll second that. Reynolds has a storefront in Orlando that I frequent; they have consistent excellent service & personnel that are very knowledgeable about the products they sell.

thanks for the help fellas

sorry if it seemed like i was an ass at first, i just hate it when people play the search card

thanks again guys!

hey so i went to the smooth-on website and found the silicon mold agent and things but i noticed how EXPENSIVE it is. i guess i have 2 questions to add to this topic if that is ok.

1) how much would i need to mold my MVI helmet? (to save cost)

and 2) is there anything cheaper with comparable quality?

by how much, do you mean silicon or money?

well as far as silicon, you would need the gallon unit which is arround $170 shipping would probably be arround $30

I know you are supposed to pour the smoothcast 300 into a silicone or latex mold, but has anyone ever tried pouring it into a plaster, or fiberglass mold? Does this work, or will it ruin the smoothcast 300? How does the smoothcast harden, is it a chemical reaction with the air, or is it dried up by the mold that it is poured into? I know you are supposed to pour latex into a plaster mold which absorbs the water, thus drying out the latex. However, I do not know enough about the smoothcast products to know what kind of mold to use. Please advise me if you have any information.

Thanks,

Super-Ang

Guys, I have a question.

I liked this site because of the good prices but,

Is hobbycast.net a good website to get supplies from?

Try The Engineer Guy for molding and casting supplies, there's a banner link on the 405th homepage.

Instead of buying tubs of silicone and latex, why not just get tubes of caulking?

Some places (Walmart, your local hardware store) sell 10.1 oz (or something around that) tubes for $2, so assuming that would make 1 gallon of caulking around $26 (roughly).

Much cheaper than buying from an official supplier, and caulking comes in either silicone or latex. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong.

There is a greater chance of ruining your work using caulk, it's not designed for mould making and can be pretty difficult to work with. There's more info on using caulk for moulds somewhere on here but I would suggest spending more to get a product that's designed to work :)

Silicone can be used BUT you need to add some other "ingredients". You'll need some glycerine (any pharmacy type store should have this)and acrylic paint (In tube form from a hobby store like Micheals).

Basically for every tube of silicone you use a couple drops of silicone and a thin ribbon of acrylic paint. Not sure how this works but it does....got this tip off of another site called SithTrainingTemple....

If you want i can copyand paste the tutorial here if you want.

Yeah, here is one

Still, a bit of glycerin, paint, and caulking would probably be under $200! (Just one would have to be extra careful) I'll have to try some of this - Have about 1/4 tube caulking sitting on my desk all sad :lol

Caulking is a pain to sand (and dremel), although if you wet down your fingers it spreads rather easily, getting it perfectly smooth is a different story, though.
