Jesus, looks like a freshwater hydrozoan. Some sort of colonial organism to be sure...could even be baterial like the kind found in caves.

They exist in lakes too.

I think Sean's hit on what it really is. Wierd, the marine Bryozoan colonies I've seen usually have a hard skeleton made of Carbonate. Never saw the creepy freshwater jelly ones before.
