Just got back from the movie, and WOW. I am blown away. Definitely stay until after the credits. You Sammy L. fans will not be disapointed. :D

Well for all the b*tchin about getting ripped off with my molding supplies - My friends, here are the fruits of my labor. Though we are a long way aways from a finished product, I thought it only suiting to unveil my work on the opening day of this tremendous movie.

Without further ado:

Stay away from bottles that look like this!

Repairing the helmet after a disastrous attempt at making a plaster scrap mold.

Lousy silicone.

The rough scrap helmet that will be molded once complete.

The same helmet 2 or 3 rounds of bondo in. It's getting close to being complete.

After the body work, painting and glazing I'll be at the molding game again, but this time I'll be making a void glove mold for this pup. I think that will work MUCH better with the supplies I am stuck with.

Then off to fix the back of the helmet and on to the rest of the armor. I think I just gained all the motivation I could ever need to finish this project tonight. Wow that movie was amazing.

Finnish, I know English is not your first language but, I'd like to think manners and consideration are universal. Your comment does not help anyone at all and, is actually quite rude. Anyone who makes a helmet, puts a lot of time into it, If you cant learn to comment constructively and with good sense, I'd like it if you didn't post at all.

It has nothing to do with language, Finnish knows exactly what he is saying..

Looks fantastic! That you already made a silicone mold AND sculpted the mask makes me proud to have you on board.Cant wait to see what you can do with some good (proper) molding supplies

well, if he has any idea how thin the ice he's on is, he'd pull his head in.

back on topic, this looks like a great build, I cant wait to see the tooling copy all finished up. There is something truly magical about primer grey. :) I agree with you on the movie, they did a great job. Its good to see Marvel actually make a movie, and keep it true to the source material. I have high hopes for their future projects. I cant wait for the DVD release, the nice clear line art in the credits is all I'd need to make some pretty swish models.

I don't see how it is sooo much better than the other dudes? right now this one isn't even done!

the only real difference i see is that this one has a little longer face on it. both helmets were done very well!
We have all seen "less talented" people out there try their hardest and come up with props that "aren't movie quality" which are still great props/costumes but that shouldn't mean we have to shoot them down because of their short-comeings.
In this case of the two Ironman helm both are very good.

now for compairing the two of their minor details....let's all wait until they are both done.

No more posts about comparisons. I mean it. It will not end well and is disrespectful to the OP
back to the topic, which is Yodajammies sculpt.

aye. Darth's painting and finishing are downright phenominal. Hopefully he will give us a tutorial write up on how to get the lines as crisp as he did. That and his symmetry is much better than mine. You'll notice I've only given you shots from one side at a time. There is a tremendous amount of work required on fixing the cheek "bones" with this sculpt. I'm sure you can notice some pretty defining flaws in the clay sculpt.

The main complaint I have about this forum is the lack of production work. You see 8000000 threads about what we are "going" to make, and about 10% of those actually follow through with pictures and progress. You guys have NO idea how hard it was to not rack up a frivolous 1000 posts talking about this pup until I was ready to have SOMETHING to show for it.

But actually I'm just jealous I didn't think of doing the "teaser shots" like Adam is doing with his secret project. :p

Thanks for the kind comments guys! Hopefully we'll see this helmet complete by next week, two at the max.

Looks good, Yoda. Just like you, having seen the movie last night and already seeing more people's attempts at making this has got me itching to do my own, lol. But, I should first finish with my Mk VI armour before I take on anything else :p

I like the work you've put in on the "crap" casting so far. I'm sure it's going to come out great! The first pic of it... looks like the "crap" casting is made of resin. Is that true? Or are you using some other material for the castings? o_O

yeah the crap casting was a necessary evil because of the clay I used and my novice experience at sculpting. I knew I was not going to get a perfect enough sculpt to start pulling finished copies from so I figured I would take it in steps. That and I was really impatient to get molding. I should have spent an extra week refining the bust before moving to the molding process, but hey, live and learn. :)

Yes, my prototype is a resin "cast" from the ruins of my 2nd attempt at molding using sub-standard silicone products. The mold actually tore into two pieces from the cut I had to make to remove it from the bust, so I made the best of the situation and slush cast both halves like you would an AR, then taped the halves together, sealed em, and continued to slush cast like you would a one-part glove mold helmet. Made for a little extra work sanding out the seam and the rough spots, but I think it was a fairly successful compromise. This resin is from greer. It's brittle, heavy, but it sands easily without gumming up my mouse. That about the only good thing I have to say about it.

Thanks for the info, dude! Helps to give me some ideas on what to do when I get to the molding/casting stage. I know next to nothing about doing that, as I've never had to in the last eight years I've been in this hobby, lol.

So, it's much appreciated ;)

Despite your own self-critique of your work (I know from personal experience we're our own worst critic, lol), I think the bust came out looking just fine, with maybe a few things to "tweak" here and there.

That's no biggie, though. For many of us, this hobby involves a lot of trial and error at first. Even so, the work you've done on that crap casting is really good. I'm already starting to get a feel for what it'll look like finished.

Keep it coming! :D

haha thankee!

So I'm sitting here at work, Ironman on the desk keeping me company, and my boss walks in.

I grab the mask, put it on, and turn to look at him. He just stares at me for a minute, shakes his head, and then walks away.

:D

Nice work! Did you do a custom sculpt or is this pep based? I'd love to make an Iron Man costume for my son, maybe one for me to display full size in my office.

Geo

the other ironman helmet is really cool, but its done already. this one will be really neato too....i hope....

So...tell me (since i cant see it yet- no cash :( ) How was the film? robert downey jr. really is a great actor, is he great in this?
