Yes, this is the crappy silicone. Don't use it for glove molds. Well, don't use it at all. Blah.

Yes, Robert Downey Jr. was born to play ironman. This film is phenomenal. Better than spiderman, xmen, ANY OF THEM.

This one is way better than the other guys. His is a freaking piece of crap.
lol
People are always getting my work confused with or comparing it with someone elses.

Ha. Looking really good YJ. I'm glad to finally see some pictures after the last few weeks of hinting. If you need any tips on the painting let me know.

WOW.

I feel sorry for whoever stands in front of me once I get that reactor complete. My leds arrived today and they are ridiculously bright. Even with the step down resistor, you can't look directly at these suckers without nearly blinding yourself. And thats just ONE LED. My plans I drew up involve 13 white LEDS and 4 blue LEDS. ESSH! :)

PLEASE resize your pics. Everytime I have tried to view the first page it gets 75% done loading then freezes because of the size, even firefox can't handle it.

I would love to make an IRONMAN suit, but the movie spoiled it for me.. I want to make it with all the moving parts (flight control) and that just isn't going to happen. So I won't even start.
The suit in the movie is just so badass, that to me, anything else is just won't cut it.
I applaud, everyone in the design team, who made possible that magnificent work of art that is the Ironman suit.

I whole heartedly second that sentiment. I have to say the rocket boot with no fairing stark works on in one scene, has to be one of my favorite props of all time. I wouldnt attempt to try to make a replica armour unless I had squillions of dollars to squander to do it justice.

I really loved that movie. They did a fantastic job on the armor and stuff...
The silver armor and the flight surfaces test was really cool.

And the helmet looks really good, keep it up. Let's see a torso sometime soon, eh?

Lol not to rush you or anything. :p

nay good sir! No torso for a while.

Being the brilliant planner I am, I have most of my 60+ pounds of chavant tied up in everything from the boots to the shoulder pieces (molded and cast btw ).

In order to pull together the clay to do the torso, I'm going to finish all the little pieces I have going and THEN start on that pup.

But since I have a first customer for the helmet, I'm setting aside everything else to finish that first.

So as it stands:

The circular ear pieces will be reworked tomorrow, and I'm recasting the back of the helmet and doing a hybrid 2-piece. 85% of the helmet will be on your head, and the last back bit is going to be built into the rubber neckseal since there is the "spine" that runs into the base of the skull.

Pretty significant warping here, but you get the idea.

I tested out my glazing technique last night and I am fairly confident that the paint job for this guy is going to be no less than  worthy. haha

Pictures to come when I have something more significant to show.

WIP:

Helmet -> Shoulder -> Boot -> Upper Arm -> haven't planned out the rest of the armor

Is looking badass! just a bit more sanding on the back and your helmet is ready for some paint.

OH God!!! My EYEZ

In all seriousness though, that helmet is a work of art. After seeing the movie, an Iron Man project is definitely on my list to build after i get my ODST done. Although she laughed at me for making halo armor, my sister wants me to make her an Iron Man suit....a pink suit!!!

hypocrite, right? :rolleyes

hahah you think its bright in that image? Thats just what the camera can comprehend. For being run on a 9v battery, this array is phenomenally bright. You CAN'T look straight at it without blinding yourself.

Once I get the housing built for it, it should diffuse the light a bit better and not kill anyone I point it at. :)

And the helmet may look okay in that picture, but it still has a LOT more work to do. If you'll notice, the very back doesnt wrap around like it should. I'm probably going to bring that in a bit more.

Also, I've been running into the problem of actually getting it on my head! I built it to be very snug, so we don't run into the "bobble head" issue, but I didn't think the resin would need to be as thick as it is.

Q for all you pro casters using smooth-cast 300: How thick do you usually cast your helmets for a nice study piece?

Although it still isn't finished, you're setting the bar for me and anyone else making this helmet.

What i want to know is, are you planning on making the front half slide-up and do you have the paint picked out? To me the paint is the most important because i want that glossy finish it had in the movie. I just don't think some spray paint will give me that. Whatever you plan on getting, keep me updated here so i'll have most of this ready for my project.

No, this will be a static helmet. It would be pretty interesting to experiment with a hinged front plate, but it's kind of hard to physically build something that was done in CGI. I know the prop helmet had a movable faceplate, but it moved awkwardly, and really didn't do much to enhance the costume.

As for the paint, I have all my paints picked out. 2 bronze metallic glazes, 2 shades of hotrod red, and a can of clear glaze. To get that slick reflective look, use a clear sealing glaze - they sell it in spraypaint sized cans and works WONDERFULLY for this kind of project.

So I hit this badboy with a couple coats of paint last night to see what it would look like. Apparently it got really cold last night then hit our daily high of 85 by 10 this morning so the paint practically exploded. Thats all the bubbles you see in the coat there. I'm pretty peaved about that. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to keep the paint from bubbling under temperature swings?

I figure I'll strip the paint tomorrow, fix a couple small details, then move to molding this coming weekend. Excite!

man thats kinda scary! Maybe I should leave out the lenses and EL tape. :)
