I work in an electronics department, this is actually really common because the ones that microsoft sends us are the oldest boxes they have on hand, and then we run them for 12 hours a day.
This is also why buying a display or clearance HDTV is a bad idea, because it probably has 6mo+ of actual runtime into the product before you buy it.
Funny story about people stealing stuff, people always like to take our products that we don't nail down. So people often take off with the GPS displays which are just a plastic box with a picture inside them, or recently someone took a display portable DVD player which had been defective for the better part of a year (fried it's powersource somehow). We also get a lot of idiots who open up a DVD and put it into our player and start watching the movies as if they are allowed to do that.
