Once the battle was over it was discovered his father died when he detonated and explosive device in order to stop the Covenant from getting classified Intel; also the hospital where his mother worked was hit by a plasma mortar, Josh was later sent to a UNSC run orphanage. When ONI came offering a chance at becoming SPARTAN's to all the orphans Josh who had learned that most of his family had died jumped at the chance calming he had nothing he was equal to "Zero". During his training Zero, as he had taken to calling himself, showed amazing understanding with tactics as well as technical and mechanical systems and learned how they worked almost instantly; he could do this with any tech, Human or otherwise. Josh showed immense skill with precision and automatic weapons easily taking out large masses of targets effectively and quickly. Zero also excelled in hand to hand combat, especially when given a blade of any type; this is accredited to his father who practiced a number of Celtic fighting techniques. During a Survival training mission on a remote forest moon the group found a Covenant outpost; alone and cut off from the UNSC Zero took charge and came up with a plan to eliminate the outpost, the plan succeeded and with the completion of the training He was deployed to Reach when the Covenant attacked it in 2552. n Reach Josh was promoted to commander and put in charge of a small group of Spartan III's and ODST's tasked with defending a civilian evacuation point, using his engineering abilities and tactic prowess he and his team effectively held the position, even recovering a Type-1 Energy Weapon/Sword of a dead Elite until he was ordered to retreat and report to Earth.
