odst hybrid build

How about trying silastic glue insted (probubly find it in Bunnings). When it drys it is a bit rubbery so it should expand and contract with the alluminium.

yeah, i may not actually need a filler, the rivets/edges might give it more awesomeness :p but if i do, i'll give it a look

argh!! it has been bucketing down for the past three days and i haven't been able to get out, i want to get the parts i need asap, but i need to get my pop to help me find the best metal to use for this project. no real rush, i've got 7 weeks but i want to get started now!!!!

Ok I may have a suggestion for you. You know how I'm working with foam on my armor, well I've been working to see if I can plasma cut metal plates then Gorilla Glue them to my foam faces. It's just an Idea I had, thought I'd pass it along to you.

Not trying to divert you, just shooting you an idea.

Gorilla glue will bond to steel and foam together, it just takes 30 minutes to set though.

hmm.. not too sure i'm understanding what you're saying (i'm about to go to bed, i'm just checking for replies :p) are you saying your making the foam armor then covering it in metal? i'm kinda going to do that but in rewind: i'm going to make the metal parts and put foam inside, then extra padding and buckels.
i think if have enough metal left at the end of the build (but before painting) i will reinforce my shins with and outer coating of allum.

OH!!!!! OPIFANNY!! (how do you spell it? it means when you have a good idea) do you think this would work?
-i make my forearm base (elbow guard/cylindrical body)
-i make the small raised detail from the odst forearm out of foam
-i bond the two together

now i don't have to buy a welder :) (i wasn't going to anyway, lol)

yay! i bought the foam mats today, i'm making blueprints as i post this message. my pop gave me a scroll saw, i tested a few foam pieces and it works great :)

Ok. 2 things:
1- I'm going to sound like my D+T here but be safe and don't hurt your self with the scroll saw.

2- When are you going to post some pics of the progress you have made.

1-i know how to use a scroll saw, i'll be safe :p

2- i only just bought the foam yesterday, i don't have any more progress pics yet.. i will however try to put up a few tomorrow of my blueprints and of the foam i have cut so far :) it has been raining heavily so work has been slow, but i will be working on the foam this afternoon and i spent all of yesterday afternoon decideing how i was going to cut the foam. once the foam stage is done, i will get some metal to start the shoulders/forearms. helmet will be done eventually. i know how you feel, no pics sux, but i'm working on it :p !!!!!! promise!! pics are soon!!

EDIT: just took these:

ok, so today we are going out so i will be getting another 4 pack of mats and some strapping :p . i have put all of the stuff on, and i think i actually should build the torso/back armor, just to fill in the empty gaps :) the stuff all fits nice, and the legs look beastly. my bum pack also does the job nice :p, my chestplate/side armor/middle armor (goes under chest plate) all do the job and look quite odst-like but i think it is missing alot, so i have to figure out how i'm going to build the torso/back armor....

BTW if you didin't already know, i have not used pepakura files at all, apart from the chest plate i built earlier, but that wasn't in proportion so i didn't actually use it :p i have drawn my own blueprints to use as a base, then altered the cut out foam by rounding and adding little notches and stuff to fit the reference pics (THANKS HALOPEDIA/HALO REACH!!!) if anyone has any good reference pics of the halo reach odst's back armor, could you post them?? ty in advance if you do :)

Totally awesome mate, your Biuld is lookin fantastic with that foam!

What I'm doing with my metal plates, is just using the measurenments of the faces on the parts I want to cover.
If you've seen my build you can tell I'm almost done with my shins, my thighs are next. I can't wait to see what you're going to do with your helm, whether you foam or built it with pep.
I'd like to see how you'll be affixing your plates.

Also, Have you thought about making the Butt-pouch Function? like dig it out and make a working flap over lid.

hey jester :p glad your still watchin, yeah, i have thought about making it funtion, but to do that i might need to make an entirley new one, so i think that this one i have now will become a crotch plate, and i will make a new one that is useable. my new crotch plate (old bum pouch) will be a whole inch thick to protect my balls from incoming plasma fire!

i have just gone out yesterday and spent almost $60 on nylon strapping, plastic buckels and.... MORE FOAM!! i also went down to bunnings, and i'm pretty sure my pop lied... the allum pieces that were supposed to be 'a few bucks' turned out to be $30 a sheet, so i will either not use metal or i will use the metal my pop already has. i drew up some blueprints for the back armor, hip plates and shoulders yesterday so i will transfer them to foam and cut them out soon.

I need to check this forum for often, good work with the foam!

About the metal, I would use a high-gauge steel instead of aluminum. Steel is cheap and accepts bending easier, but more importantly, steel can be welded. I know that sounds expensive, but if you cut and form the pieces yourself, having a welder just tack them together shouldn't cost much (you can fill in the gabs with JB Weld). Heck, I'd help you myself, but Australia's a LONG way from where I am!

haha, yeah, i think i will have a few sheets of foam left after the next piece i'm making so i'll just make the forearms outta that, metal is out i think... anyway, when i finish cutting/glueing these last few bit's i'll post a few more pics.

pretty sweet so far man, it is looking pretty awesome and is that helmet model Kirrou's model? well can't wait to see more and keep up the good work :)

hey roadkill :p the first helmet i attempted was kirrou's and i thought it was a bit hard, so a pepped a few other things then tried another helmet, this time rundown's and with my advanced peppng skills and a easier helmet, i actually finished it this time :)!!! sorry that i haven't put pics up for a while, it's been raining and i've been concentrating (oww my brain hurts...) on how the hell i'm going to strap this together before i go any futher... thanks for the replies and i'll get back to concentrating and waiting for the rain to stop. (i find it hard to get motivated while it is raining..)

btw i just went out and bought two nerf recon's (one for my sis, shh!! she doesn't know, 'santa' is due to bring it to her soon :p) and another i'm just getting the feel of before i decide how to turn it into a sniper rifle... i know, i have looked in the weapons and props thread and i'm just deciding how to go about this.... anyway back to ODST, i now have the entire torso, back (includes spine), a failed close combat shoulder, thighs, a succesful normal shoulder, hip plates, things that hang from your belt and cover the gap in between your thighs and your belt (i call them thighs: part II), knees, shins, calfs and boots (excluding toe). if you count unfinished parts i have all that plus another normal shoulder, two forearms (not yet planned), boot toes and i need to go buy some skateboarding knee pads, to go above the knee conected to the shin. once these last bits have been cut i will take a few pics and then begin strapping. i also am thinking eight buckles is not enough....

ok, i have started work on my sniper (as well as keeping up with my odst :)) all i have done is make the flash, that needs to be resized, and a barrel extension. how to assemble it:
step one- assemble nerf recon all apart from barrel.
step two- insert non-enlargened end of barrel extension into connecting side of barrel and slide it to fit.
step three- place the flash on the end of barrel extension
step four- click barrel to nerf gun

i still need to look at a proper scope and the butt of the gun.. i also need to replicate the stock a few times so i can have a few varients: an assault rifle, a sniper and maybe a DMR. at the moment the gun is still able to be transformed back into a normal nerf gun, perfect for interchangeable varients. oh, pics to follow.. and the flash is NOT cardboard, it's wood.
