This time I tried the chipped paint look by first painting on a chrome color. I then dabbed on Vaseline to spots where I wanted the paint to chip off. This worked out really well and I recommend it. The paint chips are very convincing. Using tape to remove the bits of chipping paint works great...

The short answer is that it takes time and a lot of work. To get the real small details it takes a lot of sanding or grinding. Id recommend a file to sand the details. When you Bondo you should use light coats and not glob it on thick.
