hey guys i have been trying diffrent ways to make the helmets i build in diffrent ways as far as not using fiberglass resin
to make the pep models hard.

now this doesnt go without the exception of bondo body filler. that is a must for detail.

anyways here is a list of things i have used and got great resaults.

(TruckBed Spray) that stuff will make your helmets just as hard as fiberglass resin. it not only will make the helmets hard but it will weather proof them as well. a great alternitive $7.99 at any autozone/wal-mart.
i use it on both the outside and the inside of my helmets and 1 can will give you a thickness of about 2-3 inch thickness
on both sides. adding another can will deffenetly give you strength to you helmets and adding bondo after will not melt the plastic because the formula used in the truckbed spray is strong enough to withstand alot of heat.

i have even used fiberglass along with the truckbed spray and it didn't melt anything so you may want to combine the two for added thickness. as a builder it's upto you.......... here is a pick of 2 helmets i am working on that use the truckbed spray and they look great.....

Hmm...very cool idea. I'm actually fairly intrigued. It doesn't sag the paper at all?

I'd love to see more pics and input on this stuff.

Truck bed sprays are extremely durable material, it can withstand alot of beating but will go back to the original shape, ut i dont know what it'l do to paper.

nope the paper will not sag one bit! the stuff turns into a very hard plastic .

there is 2 versions of this stuff and one is the spray and the other is a huge paint can were you can brush the stuff on .
try it out and see . it takes only like an hour for the stuff to set in. and the vapers are very strong so be careful not to breath it in use proper breathing mask.

very nice...I've been looking for a cheaper and safer alternative to using fiberglass resin. I was thinking of using paper mache, but this sounds like it could work for me.
Is this stuff toxic? What kind of texture does it have? Can the helmet be strong enough to already be worn and painted after this stuff sets in?
I will keep an eye on this thread.

I'm not 100% sure but I would say it's fairly toxic. The texture should be kind of like an orange peel.

I imagine it's fairly toxic when you spray it down but as it's a truck bed liner once it hardens I imagine its safe. If you have spray on liner you dont wear a mask before going near it do you :p hah. And the think the texture might give it kind of a rugged look.

How much detail does it lose? Especially on hi-def stuff.

If you use light coats...I imagine probably none. Just look at any spray on liners. They hug every curve, crevace, and bump. So there shouldn't be a problem Im thinking. I'm gunna be watching this. Might go test some stuff later.

Careful of what brand you use, some are just protectants which don't actually harden, they're just made to cover the truck bed itself. Some truck bed sprays are soft when cured.

I did some reading and apparently these bed liner products can be just as hazardous as resin or urethane paint, so you're still gonna need that respirator. Just an fyi. I can see this being much easier to apply and possibly cheaper though.

....and for added support, instead of fiberglass on the inside, use the frost hot glue method! Cheaper, and still very strong! I was wondering how well truck bed liner worked, and bondo should help it even more(if the model doesn't flex)
I know near exactly how my armor is going to be like.

Thats what I was thinking.

Having a smooth helmet that is used in battle against aliens on a daily basis isn't very realistic.

Thanks for the picture!

Also, would it be the fumes that are toxic, or the spray itself?

yep thats the stuff and your welcome guys. i new this stuff was a good idea to post .

and yes it's still toxic when spraying but once it cures it's as safe as any plastic .
and if done correctly you can cote 2 or more helmets with one can. and guys this stuff will not make the paper sag.

as for texture once this stuff is hard yes it leaves a some what rough look but easly mannaged with bondo anyways .

if you really want a thick enough helmet i would use 2 cans on 1 helmet and let me tell you guys this! the helmet will be so durable in the end.........very strong.

yeah, some bed sprays are rubbery, and then i think this is more the plastic-y kind, because its for rails and siding and stuff.
