So recently my computer got a virus, I'm not sure what kind or what, but now I am working from my other computer. Anyone have any advice or suggestions that could help my predicament?

If you would answer these questions for me -
PC or Mac?
What operation system?
Did you have any security software on your computer?
How did you get the virus? (do you know what program gave it to you or if you got it in an email...)

What kind of virus blocker do you have? If you want smething reliable, get AVG, it is free to download and works great! For now, try using system restore to try and get rid of the virus.

Well, it was a PC and had Windows 2000 XP. I had AVG but for some reason it all of a sudden shut down and I got a virus.

Are you sure it's a virus? What are the symptoms? What anitvirus are you using? I ask because sometimes adware/spyware can cause problems. There's a lot of free stuff available (usually) through antivirus apps (like Norton or Mcaffee) that will clean up problems. You shouldn't be on the net without some form of protections. You could also download Spybot Search and Destroy (it's free), and so is SuperAntiSpyware. If your computer isn't booting up, it could be a boot sector virus, but my first guess would be hardware. I couldn't say without knowing what the symptoms are.

I love spybot S&D :)

Shes right though, you should run it if you can. It works great.

It just suddenly shutdown? If you're comp shut down try booting it in safe mode...

Well the symptoms are that the computer turns on and goes to the desktop. Everything is all fine and then, I can't click on anything and nothing responds. And then like 50 messages pop up at the same time saying "Warning Spyware detected" and then the thing just shuts down. I think I might as well just wipe my comp and just reinstall everything from scratch.

start it with the DOS and start on a recent restore point.

I use AVAST! anti virus it works quite well, its a great combo with spybotS&D. Be carefull with the system restore, I had a virus about 6 months ago that when I tried the system restore, it self replicated itself through every restore date. Avast! was the only way to get rid of it, my norton at the time did nothing.

i just finished getting rid of a masive virus on my computer, alot of ppl mentiond Avira Anti-Vir aand it def. worked, i got spybot and macaffee *both didnt fix the whole problem* but mavaffee kinda helped with it

Get all important data to safety -> backup word documents etc. to dvd/external hdd.

although it's the worst-case scenario, some viruses dig so deep into the system that you can't uninstall them.

anyway, before you do anything, backup important data. you never know...

This isn't real virus that might to do some damage to computer.
This is famous hacker's tactic to force you to pay few bux for unneeded software.
They forcing you to visit some website and download some repairing software.
That software will display to you that you have million viruses.
Then it'll say that for cure viruses you need full version and it costs for example 10 bux.
Then you pay and get "full version", that do nothing but say that it cured all viruses on your computer.
Thats all.
They're got your money, and you didn't really had any viruses :)

Spartan-270, I know computer problems are the worst, but BevBor is right. It's not a virus. It is a heck of a nuisance though. The good news is, it can be fixed. Since you have two computers, I would suggest....(if you would like to use my suggestion, if you would prefer to slick your machine and start from scratch, have at it)...that you disconnect your sick computer from internet access. Just unplug the Ethernet Cable from the back of the PC. Using your healthy computer, go to SuperAntiSpyware and download the "Free for Homeusers" version. Copy the executable to a jump drive (usb flash, jump drive, floppy, external drive, whatever you have that you can copy it to) and then walk it to your sick PC, boot up and install it.

I've had this very same problem (about two months ago) and in a matter of minutes, after running the scan/fixing errors, I was able to reclaim my PC (and I only have one - no back up for me).

After you install, it will likely ask you if you want to check for updates...skip this step and proceed with a quick scan. After it reports the results, you'll have an option to "Fix Errors". Let it fix everything. Then, reboot and plug in your ethernet cable back in.

I hope this helps. Best of luck.

...ditto, he's absolutely right. This is Ad ware. If you truly want to get rid of it without paying for a good malware removal software, you will need to reformat your hard drive. There are a few free programs that may get rid of it completely, but most will just "quarantine" the malicious files but not restore the registry. Pay for a legitimate program or reformat. If you have never heard of a program, don't download it until you have researched it.(don't trust ratings unless they are from a reputable source...anyone can claim 5 stars) Safe internet browsing is easy to do (with any os or browser) I have run into 2 instances of adware and 1 trojan in the 5 years that I have had my current computer. I have used several antivirus, firewall, and malware softwares, but none have protected me better than just browsing smart. Your browser has security settings. If you use them, and stay away from obvious "problem" areas of the web such as torrent, porn, and warez sites, your computer will be much more secure. Use the "Help" function if you don't know what different settings do.

TURN OFF REMOTE ASSISTANCE AND REMOTE DESKTOP! These are default "on" when windows is installed. They are a backdoor for hackers, and Microsoft no longer has live support for them anyway.

Srry for the rant, just trying to help

P.s. Don't download toolbars from yahoo, google, or anywhere else. Does your browser not have a search box? Don't you have enough ads in your email? Zwinky is also malware...what legitimate program uses over 20 processes when not in use?!

I could go on, but I won't...

IF you've got windows then there's a number you can call that'll talk you through everything. I had problems a while ago and tried everything but it didn't work. So called them and after trying like 20 different things with them finally fixed the problem. To detect the problem I use Ewido Micro. usually if you find where the problem then you can write down the location of it then boot up in safe mode and search for it and delete it that way
