Right, thanks to a can of Strongbow, I've gone and fixed all the images, and further more, uploaded some more progress pics.

Finally finished the sketch model, or rather what I'm actually going to finish on the sketch model. I've left out the forward grip and vent shield for expedience, as I just need something to show my tutors.

And here's the fool behind the project himself, being a fool with it.

As you can I've muffed up on the back cradle, as I've placed it too far forward. As it's only attached with sticky back tape, I can handle that easily tomorrow perhaps.

Nice! Awesome to see you holding it, makes the scale more impressive. This looks like it's shaping up quite well so far!

The sketch model is 127 cm long without the vent shield/cap. The final version will be 135 cm long.

I was thinking, one of the obstacles of building this, and I'm sure any other replica prop, is the obscure dimensions. I did alot of rounding up and down while building the sketch model, and this inevitably lead to some conflicts along the way. I was thinking, to make things easier for me with the final copy, with the various sources I've using, produce a simplified blueprint using Pro/DESKTOP. Thoughts?

I'll say. Brilliant work so far, looking forward to seeing how it comes out

@SPARTAN II

I'll try and get abit of the housing done over the weekend, see how I'm feeling throughout all the food and booze I'll be consuming!

Right, one thing I need to start doing is thinking about how I'm going to hinge the housing. I'll have a good think about that, and if anyone has some input, that'll be grand! (bit of the yorkshire there for yah)

Well, if booze helps the process along, then so be it :lol

The only thing I could think of for doing the hinges would be to buy some of those hinges generally used for modern trunks. They're fairly long and very narrow, so they should fit into the launch housing pretty well, imho.

Indeed! Really helps to give one a clear idea of the scale of it. Looks damn good so far, dude ;)

I don't see why not. I agree that would make the final build a lot easier on you. Myself and another member here are collaborating on converting my own SPNKr blueprints to AutoCAD, but that's still in the initial stages of completion (almost done the side profile, but nothing else).

I think it would be worth your while to do that. From personal experience, I know that extensive planning earlier in a project really helps to make the actual build easier and quicker. R&D's half the battle, imho.

Just a quick update before I plod off to bed in a bit. Began work on the Pro/DESKTOP model with simplified dimensions.

If I could just remember where i put the disc for Pro/DESKTOP 8, and why it isn't installing on my laptop, I could work on it a lot faster.

WOOOOOOT!?! Yup I'm back, and I've completed the CAD model using simplified dimensions. From this I'll produce the schematics that I'll be building the final prop from. Thanks to bevbor for supplying his Solidworks model, which I took the initial dimensions from.

There's still some tweaking that needs to be done, like the main hand grip, the trigger guard detail conflicted with any rounding I tried to put in, and I know there there are details missing, but this is good enough to work from, so I'll add those during the actual build.

I'll have ago at producing Orthographic drawings for download if anybody is interested. If so, I'll also fix all the details and tweaking needed.

Abit of info on the final build. I've found it near enough impossible to find PVC piping in 85mm diameter for the barrels, so unless I can get them custom, I'll have to stick to using postage tubing, and harden them with a coat of resin.

*Breaths in*

Also, at this point in time, I'm thinking of revealing the big secret of the project soon, though I think most people can guess already, some will already know, I'm sure (if you do, don't ruin the surprise). shall I break the secret now?

where did u get the tubes for the launcher cuz im thinkin of making one? lookin realy good man many props

They vary in diameter from place to place a bit, but if you have to time to look I thought I'd mention that the cardboard tubing used for reams of fabric is usually far thicker and more durable then postage tubing, and comes in massive lengths. A lot of wholesale fabric places don't tend to mind just letting people take the empties either... or costumers/tailors that buy the whole ream and would just toss the tube when they're done. :)

Postage tubing can be easily obtained from a post office or stationary shop. In the UK they come in 80mm diameter, which is close enough to the real thing. I've tried looking for PVC piping, such as plumbing tubing, but I haven't found anything close enough to the diameter to what I need, that may be different in the states though.

I've looked around a fair to no avail. The major modelling suppliers in London stock every diameter but what I need. Looking into DIY store though, they stick to standard plumbing diameters, and the nearest to 80/85mm is 75mm half pipe, which actually isn't. Buuuuut, thanks you for the cloth reams suggestion, that might just save my bacon. Luckily there's a fashion studio in my block at college, I'll nip in and ask them if they'll have any to spare.

great work!!! i want one!!!! cant wait to see it all finished and painted

Thanks guys! I'll be going back to college on Monday, and once I've got my project presentation out of the way, I'll be able to start work on the final model full time. Hopfully be seeing some result from that within a week.

I've looked into the fabric reems, but one of the specifications for the rocket module prevents me from using anything thats too thick. Thanks for the input though.

Heh, yours makes my little 4 hour SpNker look like a kiddies toy XDD

Lol, no worries, it's a Chibi SPNKr!

But really, no one wants to know what the big secret is?

Quick update. I wasn't able to get as much done on in the week as I would have hoped. Had trouble tracking down the postage tubes I needed, and Modern Warfare 2 was delivered to me early :D . Had a critique on the Friday, but managed to the template for the rocket module's casing done. Hadda make 2 since the nib on the compass I used was off by a couple of millimetres. Remember kids, always check your tools are properly calibrated before you use them.

Sanded down the surface of the postage tube down a bit. This'll smooth down the ridges from where the paper overlaps, but not much, once resined I'll have a good go at smoothing them down.

Cos of space issues, I'm going to build it so the rear section of the rocket module will collapse into the front. What I want to do is to make a cut down 2 of the postage tubes so I can fold one side into the other, and reduce the diameter slightly. Must remember to take the resin and paint into account (I forgot to do that on one of my projects last year, big mistake). I'll get to work on that tomorrow.

Got some more work done today, cut out the structure pieces for the rocket module's casing.

the barrels. you can should be able to see where the tubing for the rear section has been scored and cut to enable it to be curled in on itself slightly. Surprisingly, there's a fair bit of overlap to affix the 2 sides together. The cardboards natural elasticity is causing it to push out, so I'll need to put roll them up a bit to loosen the tubes up.

Here's the layout of the structure pieces on the barrels, extended...

and here collapsed.
