Dark's Cqb Helmet

Well, it has been awhile since I posted an update. I have been busy with work and personal items over the last couple of months and haven't had much free time to work on my helmet until now. Here is what I did over the last few weeks.

All the details are entirely made from bondo. I used weather stripping and foam with double sided tape to make molds to spread the bondo in. I removed the weather stripping/foam before the bondo is fully cured.

I created the detail that is on top of the helmet (don't know what it is called) on my wood lathe. When I was done I removed the finished part, filled in any imperfections and made a mold so I can cast multiple copies. The mold is in the background. I also made some with threaded inserts so I can attach them with bolts.

I also made the fins in the back from clay and made a mold to cast them in plastic. I removed the fin insert and bent them slightly to match the curve of the helmet before the resin fully cured. Then, I used a dremel to carve out an area to insert the fins, attached the fins and filled in the gaps.

I will hopefully have some more updates in a couple of weeks. Stay tuned.

Wow! Very nice. But I cant tell this isn't your first time because of the immense detail you put onto it. I'd love to know what color you're going to paint it in.

Thanks. I haven't decided but I'm thinking of painting it a dark gray (maybe charcoal gray) with black highlights.

Wow man the amount of detail your putting into this is amazing. The visor also looks great. I am digging your weather strip mold technique for adding detail. I might have to try that for my build when I get there. Keep up the good work. I can't wait to see it finished.

Thanks. Depending on the type of weather strip you use, it might leave some residue. I picked up a sanding stick to remove the residue without loosing the sharp lines. This is a very handy tool. Here is what it looks like.

Beautiful helmet.

As others have said - hard to tell this is your first, the detail is sharp and crisp, and there's alot of it.

Can't wait to see the final product!

Thanks for the advice this tool looks like it would come in handy. I will look into picking on up before I Bondo/Rondo haven't decided yet. Your doing great with bondo so I might just try that and see where it goes. lol

Here is the current status of my CQB helmet. I still need to add the rest of the details and clean up the paint lines, but that will have to wait until warmer weather. It's not good to paint in 20 degree weather with 2+ feet of snow.

You're making the best helmet very well. I can't wait to see yet more progress on this and the rest of the suit.
