First Build: Dead Space 2 Engineer Suit

I was planning either Electroluminescent Tape or LEDs mixed with an opaque plastic across the holes. Problem is vision. The thing is, clear plastic doesn't disperse light evenly like opaque does. If I choose a more clear plastic to see, it'll be less accurate, but opaque will look nice...

The RIG, Stasis, and Locator will be an exception to the choice. Those will certainly be opaque.

Any other suggestions?

Finished the left arm pieces this morning <3

They fit nicely, but the forearm had to be split near the wrist so my hand can slip through. Does anyone know where the best place would be to get magnets that I can put on one end and it's opposite on the other end? I need them a little strong.

Try mirrored sunglasses with a white netting over the front of them. It makes them look high tech, and with LEDs shining on the lens, it gives the appearance of glowing eyes while being able to see for a decent price. I'll post pictures of mine when I get the EL wire in the mail, ordered it yesterday. (I'm using EL Wire because i'm using it all over my project, LEDs work just as well)

Sounds good, I use polarized car (mirrored)
adding various safety laminated glass, approximately some 3 layers.

So a mirrored surface won't affect how light looks on the inside? The mirroring is not going to hinder the light visibility?

having just finished the first dead space game for a second time, the little details in the arm pieces really do match almost perfectly to the game (which is good for such a HD game)

The suit I'm making is from Dead Space 2 so it'd look different, but it's pretty similar to the DS2 suit. I go in and out of the game to make sure it has the little details and bevels. =P But yes, there are similar qualities in the suit, and that's what makes me love the suit. DS1 has the best atmosphere and experience, which is why it's my favorite one, but DS2, in my opinion, has a better Engineer Suit. It's sharper, more detailed and form fitting, and dirtier. If I could have DS2 Engineer Suit in the first, I'm set. XD

haha, yes, I used the unfold you sent me. I just seamed the broken segments together and reorganized them to save space on paper.

On some of the unfolds I fixed, I put extra/symmetrical faces on a "ignore page" so when printing, you can count that one out in the printer settings (instead of printing 8/8 pages, you print out 7/8) and you still have all necessary faces. For example, the torso, I would put one of each specific object on 1 or 2 pages, then crowd a last page with all the remaining faces (overlapping is fine as this page is disregarded). I put large texts near the center of that page and type "Ignore this page". When printing, simply take one number off the final count, and you're saving tons of paper and ink =]

I have to keep all the faces of the torso in the model so measurements can be set properly, so removing faces has to be done in Pepakura, but the only way to do this was sacrifice extra faces as, with it being foam, faces can easily be duplicated via template. (trace 20 similar shapes of 1 template, rather than trace 20 similar shapes with 20 similar templates). So doing the torso in foam MAY actually only need one or maybe 2 pieces of paper, then one ignored page. If you dont do an ignore page, it could equal up to 10, maybe 12 pages or so.

So damn excited to see this thing come together

If they announce a Dead Space 4, or any continuation of the franchise, I'll make an armor set too

Bumpity bump bump, bumpity bump bump,
Look at all this foam!

Finished the right arm. I need to figure out a way to secure the shoulderpieces. Velcro? Clipping buttons maybe?

I'm hoping to have this done for Dead Space 3's release as it comes out on my birthday =D

not a bump if you have pics :p Also you may want to look into magnets, but with plain foam, but that's something to be asked in the "Foam Help" thread, might get some helpful replies there.

Okay, I have a serious question to ask of you all. As stated when creating this thread, I told that the Engineer suit WAS, in fact, a ripped model my friend gave me about a year ago. Now, I am aware of distribution of ripped models, even when giving credit, is illegal. But I was unaware that .pdos could be converted back to .obj so I thought they would be useless in a digital sense, and could only be available in .pdo format. Now, realizing I could possibly be distributing a form of a ripped model that could be used for digital purposes (.obj), I'm feeling even more uncomfortable having an open download link available...

Should I:
1) Keep the link download (bad).
2) Remove the link all together and do not provide a public distribution.
3) Contact Visceral Games/EA and request permission to distribute. (highly unlikely outcome)

For now, The link is being removed until I come up with a decision... This is kind of bothering me, knowing a good amount of people have already downloaded the suit. I didn't think it would be such a big deal but now I'm not as eager to share.

I hope you guys can give me your opinions. As right now, I'm thinking of removing the download all together.

This has been a really big question for pepakura since it's beginning, as for using ripped models (and don't quote me on this) for private use and not for profit purposes is fine, Here's a new thread that just popped up with rips in it that is being okay'd (don't quote me on this) by moderators on here: http://www.405th.com/showthread.php/38847-Halo-Reach-Source-Assets-Release-Thread

Now if you still don't feel like keeping the download up it's up to you. Or you could put a lock on them, but that's up to you.

As a 3D modeller, working to become a game developer, I know the reasons behind the wrong of this. I figured .pdo would be fine because it's not a useful format for anything other than pepakura. But I dun goofed...

As much as I would like to share the files... I think I'm going to keep it personal. Keeping a rip for yourself and non-profit is legal (which I planned from the start), but the distribution is not. Which... I guess I did unknowingly.

I'm sorry guys =[ I want to stay on the safe side when it comes to legal matters. I will still be building the suit though, of course!

That's fine, your model your rules for it. I'm not the model expert and I know it's a.... well, sticky situation at anything, you can always have a dislcaimer "don't do such and such" with model, which should keep you out of anything legal, but it's up to you. So just turn this into a build thread only. No probs with me at least.
