Update

Carboard templates are mostly done. I'm still not happy with the lower collar part. It's curving inward right now, which is wrong. The helmet also looks a little big, but that might just be me. Here are some pictures. Let me know what you think, especially if you can think of anything to improve.

I think "it's just you" regarding the size. If you look at enough screen-shots, the helmets DO look kinda big on the characters.

Regarding the neck part and the inward curve - try putting the template flat, and at the centre of the neck, start curving the ends upward. Basically a shallow "U". Not much of a curve, just a bit.

OR

Take a large unshaped rectangle in the very rough dimensions, place it around the helmet with the correct angle and curves, and THEN draw the final shape on to that, while it is curved on the helmet.

End remember, cardboard curves a LOT easier than sintra.

Yeah, the bucket looks good. Not too oversized. I was working on the chest today. As I'm bending and gluing, I'm realizing how much tweaking the templates need. I should have it finished(ish) tomorrow. I'll post pics showing changes after it's all together.

Couple of words for you guys. This. Is. Awesome.

You guys show some serious potential, and are rockin sum serious cardboard skills. Which I think are cooler than pep skills. ;) Good luck to you guys and your project.

Oh, and also,

the helmets DO look kinda big on the characters.

You are corect. If you've ever seen the landfall shorts, you can see that even Weta made their marine helmets HUGE. The front portion of the top is supposed to be a bit abnormally large.

Update

Fixed the collar. It's still thin, but that's just the cardboard. I also made the front plate a bit more accurate. Here are updated pics:

For a comparison, here's the game helmet and my helmet on a Marine.

The belt is from Seals Action Gear, and the buckles are from Crown Surplus, both here in Calgary.

Thats awesome that you live in Calgary. I was born there and my Grandma still lives there. I was just up there for the stampede

Here's my latest work on the chest and back. I've got the bends as good as I can get them. I may need to recut the side attachment pieces a little bit, and reposition them. I've also done a lot of sanding. Bondoing is the next step.

Hey nice work, what material did you use to make the chest piece? And what are the burn marks? Haha do you like Taekwon-Do that much(that is what the tattoo seems to look like)?

The plastic is sintra. The burns are from holding the heatgun too close. And yes, I do love TaeKwon-Do. I have my second degree black belt, and I plan on doing it all my life.

As far as the sintra goes, I got that from GE Polymershapes in Calgary, though I believe Peter can get it cheaper from the sign shop he works at.

A heat gun works wonders to get the shapes you want. It doesn't melt together, but ABS cement bonds it quite well.

I do ITF.

cool me and my buddy's (unless they back out, which is possible for one doubtful for the other) are going to go as a team of ODST's i've only finished one suit and the helm's and chest for the other's (team of 3) im using halo2 pep but it's amazing what you guys can do with sintra and !%#@imagination@#%! and a few hours lol but keep up the good work!

Hey man, you guys are badass, love the updates you guys doing. Have fun buildin' your marine armors.

Spraynoob

Thanks for the kind words guys. I picked up a few cans of spray paint at walmart today. It's Krylon Italian Olive. It looks pretty spot on for the colour of the marine armour. I bought 3 cans. I can post pics sometime tomorrow of a painted chest.

Just a heads up. How big is the baseball helmet your using?

I built mine based off a baseball helmet and it turned out relativley to large.

eh sorry the picture is dark.

i abondoned this project about 3 years ago soley for that problem. I'll probally pull of the peices and make the base of the helmet from scratch once im done with the ODST im working

Hey Shawn - it looks like the neck piece isn't quite vertical enough to hold you head comfortably. With that, it may be tough to get other poses, like crouching down and leaning forward.

While the neck is a little forward, I'm also slouching a lot in the picture. I can hold my head upright in the armour. When you make yours, you'll probably want to make it a bit straighter, but mine works ok.

Here are some pictures of the progress I've made. The first two show the dangers of being careless with an exacto knife.

I looked at my shorts and said, "Oh no, this is gonna be bad."

Marineprogress008.jpg

And it turned out to be just a scratch. Barely bled. Didn't even need stitches, just a big bandaid and some polysporin.

Marineprogress010.jpg

The rest show the real progress. I still need to do some tweaking on the backpiece, but the other parts are looking good. When the back is finalized, I'll rivet the shoulders on.
