Hello all !

I'm sure many of you use media sites such as Youtube , Vimeno , DailyMotion , and MetaCafe .

Many of these sites have innocent users uploading videos that contain songs they do not own . Many of the original owners are now wanting their share of money for the copyrighted material that is rightfully theirs ! Enter The S.O.P.A. .

A quote from the Wikipedia -

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), also known as H.R. 3261, is a bill that was introduced in the United States House of Representatives on October 26, 2011, by Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX) and a bipartisan group of 12 initial co-sponsors. The bill expands the ability of U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods. Now before the House Judiciary Committee, it builds on the similar PRO-IP Act of 2008 and the corresponding Senate bill, the PROTECT IP Act.
The originally proposed bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as copyright holders, to seek court orders against websites accused of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement. Depending on who requests the court orders, the actions could include barring online advertising networks and payment facilitators such as PayPal from doing business with the allegedly infringing website, barring search engines from linking to such sites, and requiring Internet service providers to block access to such sites. The bill would make unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content a crime, with a maximum penalty of five years in prison for 10 pieces of music or movies within six months. The bill also gives immunity to Internet services that voluntarily take action against websites dedicated to infringement, while making liable for damages any copyright holder who knowingly misrepresents that a website is dedicated to infringement.
Proponents of the bill say it protects the intellectual property market and corresponding industry, jobs and revenue, and is necessary to bolster enforcement of copyright laws especially against foreign websites. They cite examples such as Google's $500 million settlement with the Department of Justice for its role in a scheme to target U.S. consumers with ads to buy illegal prescription drugs from Canadian pharmacies. Opponents say that it violates the First Amendment, is Internet censorship, will cripple the Internet, and will threaten whistle-blowing and other free speech.

Essentially , this means that video you posted that has that one song in it ? yeah that one . It could cost you thousands .

NOW , This is good for taking care of people who have pirated media with malicious intent . BUT here's the catch . Alot of the supporters (Time Warner , CNET , MSNBC , Disney ) DISTRIBUTED the file sharing software to download so called "pirated" files . Here is a video that explains it more -
(Video NOT made by me)

How can I help?

I'm glad you asked .

Get this information to as many lawmakers in your area / country as soon as possible . Here are links to evidence -

Go to http://onecandleinthedark.blogspot.com and http://www.cbsyousuck.com for thousands of pages of evidence and links to the original source research on the Internet Wayback Machine.

Thank you for posting this Jacob. The word needs to be spread to help block the bill!

I've been following the bill since the house has been trying to pass Protect IP earlier last year. This thing is bad news, not only for the internet, but for for any kinda of future advancement of the internet really. I know TotalBiscuit did a video back in December that goes into more depth about some of the issues (video posted below).

Another good website to get information about the bills is http://americancensorship.org .It has tons of information on the bills as well as places to sign up for petetions, links to help get lobbyists in to fight the bill, as well as a Banner you can put on your website that will censor out part of your website in order to raise awarness.

As a final note, if anyone is daring (or foolish enough) to read the actual bill, you can find it here http://www.scribd.com/doc/70419349/E-PARASITES-Act . I have tried to read it myself, and all I can say is that congress really doesnt know what they are passing. I got through about 20 pages before having to put it down cause I was getting so confused with the wording of it. Mind you, i'm not a Lawyer or anything, but I feel as though I should be able to understand a piece of legislation being passed.

Update: Just checked Reddit right now and it seems as though they are blacking out the site next wednesday (January 18th) for 12 hours. Other big name websites are thinking of doing the same such as Twitter, Facebook adn Google. More in the Forbes article here.

This an example of American and worldwide rights being taken away.......

who knows, in the next ten years we might not have any rights left

...scary

It's like the ocean, in the middle you have international territory, and there are no laws controlling it. That law could be passed, but should only apply to american based servers. But I definitely don't support it. No way.

The author has no clue what this will do to the internet as a whole. "Fair Use" will have to be redefined (or defined as there is no clear definition of fair use). This bill will hurt not only consumers, but the artists themselves. This has nothing to do with piracy. This is about CENSORSHIP!

Google - Based in the US
Youtube - owned by Google = Based in the US
Yahoo - Based in the US
Amazon - Based in the US
Ebay - Based in the US
Facebook - Based in the US
Wikipedia - Based in the US
...The list goes on. This is not a US issue. It will affect the world.

STOP THIS B.S. NOW!

Well, too late. It seems that the US Government is taking action on sharing sites. Even before SOPA passes, the FBI is using whatever power it has left by enforcing the piracy law.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-31001_3-57362152-261/fbi-charges-megaupload-operators-with-piracy-crimes/

Just imagine the pepakura files we found on the web being taken down.

The lesson learned is, if don't want to get tangled with the law, don't post anything on the internet that may violate Copyright law until dust has settled.

It's stuff like this that goes down that makes people not want to even try to associate with government and big business.

Anonymous striked back and got down justive.gov and universalmusic.com. Not Xbox Live, but maybe youtube.

hey guys! I just heard that SOPA was vetoed! YUSH! but there still is PIPA... hopefully that will be vetoed too.

Veto can only take place when it is on President's desk. The bill first have to pass the house first, then the Senate. at this rate I think it is hard to get the majority of the house.

I searched CNN but I don't see anything.

Last I heard, the vote is to be on the 24th. Obama has released a statement that sounded like he would veto the bill. but He stopped short of saying spicificly saying that he would veto the bill itself. But I would like to remind the president that this is a election year.
