nah, if i did it probably would look like the standard halo sniper rifle, which alot of ppl have. i may not be as original as most people are but i atleast want to be different.

I agree with Alex. This is looking very promising. Do you have any concept sketches or anything to work off of or are you just winging it out of thin air? Making a 3d model out of this wouldn't be that hard. Might think about going that route and peping it. Also I have seen some very sweet looking prop guns made out of card board. Its all about your cuts and the finish. Lol Good luck mate keep us posted.

How would i go about making a 3D model on the computer so that i can show everyone what i plan on doing?

I love railguns :)

Just keep these few things in mind while you are designing it:

Power, give it a suitable "energy supply" cause launching things with electromagnets uses lots of energy in reality.

Don't make the rails too chunky, cause they don't have to be

Figure out what the best way to hold it would be (Tripod, lying down, held like the bruteshot, like a sniper)

Take ideas from pre-existing halo weapons when it comes to detail (you want to make it convincing)

Otherwise Good luck, Railguns are awesome things, I want to see this realized!

Well that all depends if i make it fire, keep in mind if i do make this, it would give the cops, airport security and just about anyone a good reason to take it away. I know how to make the rail gun, but Im not sure that i want to take the risk of one of my idiot friends to put something in the barrel and shooting or killing someone on accident...everyone want me to make it real. hell i wouldnt mind but their are to main problems that i have, where i live my family aint exactly to high on having anything that shoots, second i live on an island, and this is going to be as big as a sniper rifle, i just hope security does not take it.....

OH my ideas weren't for a real one, just for the general look.

good thinking, making it seem that i have battery pack and all the cool gizmos on it will make it look alot cooler, i got the spring trigger halfly made, i got that idea from someone making i think a spartan lazer with a spring trigger......but im starting to not like your opinions...for some reason all my teachers think im making a reall rail gun, some want to try and help me to make it...WHO HAVE YOU PPL BEEN TALKING TO?!?!?

Hey, guys and gals, im sorry that im a not posting updates on how the construction it going, but as of now i am still gathering all the supplies that i need to make it. given my situation at home im not exactly mobile at will, im trying to get my shop teacher to run the errands for me cause he it cool. i will post updates on how it is going as soon as i get the supplies!! srry if this thread is getting borring..... :(

WOO!! update time.....this is how I made it out of wood. I took most of your guys ideas so I used quarter inch ply and very carfully cut out all the things that needed to be cut out. To be honest, this is the first time that I have every really done something this big, and I think it came out great.

This is the updated, sniper'ish, assult rife'ish, SMG'ish, Railgun. This is only the left side and I plan on working on the right side next monday when I get back to school.

I know it looks bad around the edges because I did not sand it down before i left, on one of the comments someone said that I should make it a bit more realistic by adding heat vents, power supplies, etc. Thus I turn to the 405th community and anyone who cares, these three cuts are going to be the top frontal heat vents, i figured that using high powered magnets and electricity it has to put off alot of heat, especially if the round itself uses combustion to propel itself even faster. Anyways, the heat vents are all I got so far to I need ideas about that. Now, next...

This is my buttstock of the rifle, yes it is full of cuts and random edges, my plan is to use the quarter ply as like an outer layer. I dont know if anyone has seen that guy making the nutz spartan lazer out of wood? how he has the 1/16 foam thing on the outside for details, same concept just i did not want to spend what little money that I have when I can compensate for it with the wood. Basically I am going to put some wood in between the grip, the buttstock, and where every else the cuts are on the butt end. Of course I am going to sand it so it resembles an actual buttstock, I am to dumb to explain it so I will just put it in another update. The spacing between the top portion and the bottom will be filled in probably with some more wood or as my teacher suggested acryllic blocks, then put some lights in it, i havent worked with acryllics before but it is still an option.

I plan on putting more heat vents here but I am still deciding to cut it to make it more, sniper'y. Critisism is welcome here.

This is where i want to put the munitions in,I dont know how I will accomplish this but it is still an option.

Yes I know I look so sexy, I can't really help myself but stare....anyways like many of my other friends have said, yes it has the stock of an SMG, but my arm fits that pretty well, and to me a shorter stock, the faster your gun will rotate when you turn to shoot something. Alright that was update one and please leave comments because I have a four day weekend and I would like to plan out how to make this better.

I like the silhouette of the wood. How do you plan to fill it out, to make it larger and more 3D?

Depending on how you're doing it, you could cut off the butt off the stock, and attach a real gun's buttstock pad. There are some really cool ones out there. Then again, they will probably cost $10-20, so that might hurt your $80 budget. You could maybe look for some online, and try to replicate them. I think the 3-pronged one might be a little cumbersome, and obviously if it was real it wouldn't feel good concentrating the recoil on 3 small points like that.

Thanks for the feed back, I was also thinking about putting a real stock in their, and I plan on filling the cut points with more wood. Ill show you what I mean in the next update. I may take your idea with the grip, but the options are still good.

Just be sure not to blow too much of your budget on the buttstock pad. I imagine they can cost $10-40, which could be a big chunk of what you have to work with. I'll keep an eye out for your update.

Hmm i have been thinking on a few ideas for a portable MAC for a while now, mostly little things, but i know you can make a kinda MAC sniper easily enough with some electrical know how.

mostly my idea was for the power storage options, i know it takes a VERY good amount of power to launch something like the size of a wood nail at speeds of a bullet without propellants, if you know some things about magnetics, electronics, and electrical engineering, you can jury rig a pretty good tesla pack for a backpack unit, it would weigh between 10-15 pounds possibly more depending on materials.

i might be able to sketch out some deeper concept parts later on if i remember >_>

His post is about his wooden prop gun, not trying to make a real one. Also, this is a costume prop forum, not really the place for real railgun discussion. Railguns require phenomenal amounts of energy, and there are no power sources you can carry around. Maybe if you're willing to pull a wagon full of capacitors behind you, you could make it work. Just do some Googling... here's a good post: http://www.powerlabs.org/railgun.htm

AHHhahaha XD

Im sorry i really am, did you think i was talking about a real life FULL railgun!

That would wiegh even a TANK down, i know how to build a Magnetic Acceleration rifle from some heavy duty electromagnets, a few heavy batteries or a wall outlet, and ive been trying to work around an idea for a backpack mounted generator to recharge the batteries.

Ive had several small ideas that look somewhat promising, but are complicated.

and while yes i know hes working on a wooden mockup railgun, a truer one further down the line is not unfeasible.

heck i was work even on getting all the little tidbits for my Splaser, but then i saw the price and work involved in actuators and motors >_> ...yeah..heh..im lazy enough XD

Back on topic, Yes there are a few small ways to get a mobile recharge pack for a rifle railgun, one idea my Mate suggested was linear motors positioned around the body so that any movements would essentially continually recharge the pack, and the motors can be small enough to fit snuggly around the suit without causeing stress or warping and the wires could be hidden easy enough under fabric or light tubing.

None of that is on-topic. Please just start your own post about it, and don't hijack his post. If you don't have something to say about his wooden prop replica, it would be better in it's own topic. Good luck with your ideas.

Thanks, you make me feel so young by calling me kid.....but I was thinking that maybe having a power source in the form of a backpack. I was also thinking of making it wireless like how the Orbital MAC guns get power from the surface of the planet. But even though it is a prop, I would like it to seem atleast somewhat realistic, so any opinions are welcome.

I think I would need to carry a nuclear reactor if I make a real one, but like Awsomeness said, now would you kindley keep it on topic , and under an $80 dollars. budget.
