Kat B-320 Build

Looking righteous :)
Thanks, Mstruvmgc.

Well that looks absolutely spectacular (and not just the armour I'll shut up now).

But seriously, I disappear for a couple weeks and you've got the better half of a Kat build, and it's coming out stellar. You've still got a ways to go, but if you keep up like this it will come out spectacular.

I want to wonder why I'm the only one considering a shoulder strap for their DMR, but I'm just an ODST, not a power-armour wearing supersoldier. We've got to hike around with that stuff, can't just mag-strap it to our backs.
Haha thanks for the comment FoxTrot. I've been a busy bee recently as I usually have a few hours everyday to work on it. I do have a ways to go in terms of detailing...I have loathed working with foamies because I always seem to get the sizing wrong for the foamie layer to cover up the seams in the EVA foam. I'm going to try and trace out the pieces, but give myself a 1/4 in or so then trim the rest and hope for the best...we'll see how that goes. As for the DMR the strap I would think is more fitting for an ODST, as like you mentioned spartans just plop it up there on their back like nothing :p.

wow, you're progressing so quickly! That looks incredible!
Thanks, JD or Asgard. Cool name btw :D.

Alright guys update time! Sorry I've been busy with school work as of late...but managed to squeeze some time in for building! I was able to trace out a template somewhat similar to Lil' Tyrant's style of building where you draw out your base shape then add the detail to it after. Here is what I have so far. Enjoy!

Cut some valleys into the foam on the back so that I can glue them down and not worry about seams on the outside of the piece. Note to future foam builders: When buying foam, making sure you buy the one with the "T" like backgrounds and not this steel plate looking stuff. It's hard to cut out because the back isn't uniform so your blade sometimes doesn't go all the way through. Gluing EVA on EVA for detail is also a pain because it doesn't sit as flush as you want it to, and usually requires more silicone in the final stages to make the seam look uniform.

The piece came out a tad big so I'll have to take it in a bit. This is what it looks like on her arm with the bicep and shoulder pieces on.

I'l have to bring it in for sure as the piece is probably big enough to fit me and still look proportionate. It's a challenge trying to make female pieces as they are much more petite. Some of the pieces so far are just barely fitting while still looking proportionate. It's definitely a challenge to get things to look exactly like in game proportions with female armor. Until next time! Gonna try and take the piece in and detail it for the next update. Stay tuned!

Good detail work, I'm impressed. Foam work seems like it's so much easier and makes so much more resilient of a final product, but it requires an ability to visualize your final product that I, surprisingly, don't have. I say surprisingly because I'm usually good at spatial relations, but it's this concept of unfolding a 3D object into 2D space that's lost on me. Maybe that'll improve with all the pepakura work I have ahead of me. Maybe, if I ever get around to some foam work, I'll try using templates - I saw one guy who, rather brilliantly, kept everything put together with a bunch of pins - and just caulk the ever loving hell out of it to fill in the gaps. The other thing is detail work. I guess I've got a lot to learn when it comes to foam, but seeing as how I'm not currently working on a foam build, that's okay.

You, on the other hand, are doing a great job. I'm impressed with the detail on the bicep/tricep/spaulder/pauldron (I prefer the term pauldron when it comes to MJOLNIR armour sets, but FJ/PARA doesn't quite have the coverage you'd expect from that term). That said, it looks like all of your work is subtractive (removing sections) as opposed to additive (building up with thin layers), and I'd like to see more of your technique about that, because the fact that people can do that and not constantly overcut is insane to me. Cute Oonsk face, too.

But all in all, impressive detail. I'm sorry you got stuck with that diamond-pattern foam, I didn't know that was a thing. The only foam I've worked with had the little T-shaped hashing and even that seems like it would be enough to annoy. Do you take any steps to harden the foam? I don't think most people do, and that seems like a shame to me, though I bet it involves some chemicals and that's part of why most people avoid pepakura to begin with.

UPDATE TIME!!!

So I took the base piece of the forearm in a little so it's not as bulky and added in the foamies for detail. Somewhat pleased with what I have so far. I could've gone into more details and layers but money is tight right now and resources are low :/. Sometimes you just have to do what you gotta do to get by but hey I'm glad it turned out looking like a forearm!

this was the layout I used. I was supposed to have 3 separate layers of foam but couldn't acheive the desired level of detail due to costs...well that is all for now...gotta tackle the robotic arm next..that's gonna be a big bundle of joy... :(

Looking good. Keep up the great work. Isn't it great to see it coming together when the detail starts to be added? :D

Clean, so clean!
That last update post with the forearms, so so nice. Using the foamies to skin the EVA yields such a nice finish when applied with such skill and precision. I very much look forward to seeing the final product :thumbsup

Sorry to keep you guys in waiting for so long..I got a new job that requires me to be at the office M-F from 7am-5pm almost every day with classes at night. Trying to get this build done before October 27th! That way my wife and I will both have suits by the time Halo 5 rolls out and be ready for Halloween 4 days later :p

Thanks man. Glad you like the build so far, it's still a work in progress. I'm trying to become more of a scratch builder as it's easier to do with a foam build. My next build will probably be a Halo 4 or Halo 5 MC build. hoping to scratch build all the pieces except for the helmet, as I like to pep my helmets for the rigidity, they also make awesome home decor that you can hang up on the walls...(hopeful for a future man cave).

Update Time...

I was able to work on some of the robotic arm using reference pictures and some inspiration from lil' tyrant's build. Here are some of the progress pictures so far. Still working on the detail parts of the arm. Hopefully i'll be able to finish everything by the end of this weekend.

Here is the forearm area of the robotic arm
2AB99B74-6D8D-45CB-8CE2-3C38E2F3016E_zpsbfut6oet.jpg

the underside, I bought some wooden dowels that i'll cut to size and insert to add the hydraulic pistons that will give the arm that "robotic" look
0A6EDF6C-1B98-4104-8E2A-1EB8D850827D_zpsmxiaac8n.jpg

this was version 1.0 for the completed arm. We did some test fitting and i found the upper bicep area was a tad too large so I downsized that part. The upper elbow section was also a bit too big so i downsized that as well.

Here are some of the pictures of version 2.0 with the "shrunken" upper arm sections

I was also able to add in the hinge on the elbow using some old spare parts from our hockey skates. It works well holding the elbow piece together and is able to move quite easily with little to no resistance.

Until the next update...

Thanks Noble.

So I was able to finish up the rest of the upper arm and just have some detail work to put in before I can say the arm is done. Here is what I have so far.

Here is a picture with the chest on for size reference. I'm not 100% pleased with it as it looks a little big compared to Kat's actual robotic arm. May decide to redo it with 6mm foam instead of the EVA foam.

That's all for now...until next time.

Hey guys...sorry for not updating this thread in a while...I realized the Halo 5 release and Halloween were right around the corner I had to kick it into overdrive to finish. My wife's costume is painted and strapped and was a success at both the Halo 5 release and at Halloween. Here are the photos that I managed to take while painting.

The "battle damage" was done with a dry brushing spray paint onto the pieces. I also went over the pieces with some black to help add "depth" to the armor. I wasn't able to complete this before the Halo 5 release, but I was able to finish it before Halloween. Here are the photos of our time at the Halo 5 release and Halloween! Enjoy!

Here's a few pictures of us before we left the hotel room we were staying at. We didn't have any chances to take pictures after this as we were swamped with people trying to take our pictures! It was definitely an awesome "HALO-ween"!
