i wasnt sure were to post this, as most of the stuff i see is actually made, i made this in CAD so it's a little differnt, i would have posted it in halo universe but it wont let me create a topic there

About 3 weeks ago I started working on a futuristic bullet in CAD for the Halo 3 team im on called; Vulgarity from 2old2play.com. Ive been a Sr Designer for automotive & aerospace going on 10 years and Ive been into graphic design for about 8 yrs, so I felt this project would just be something simple and fun to mix and meld my skills from my real job to my, fun graphic design side. Once I started the bullet i figured i need a case to house the futuristic bullets in. it didnt take very long before I started to add more detail and more detail. After about a week i had completed the futuristic bullet and case concept, and i thought it came out great, but was still missing something.

So I got the bright idea that i needed a gun to tie it all together. My first thought was a 357 COP Derringer, but while it looked cool, it wasnt futuristic enough.

So i then turned my attention to the Halo CE Pistol. I thought, hmm, i could do that. So it started, i had tons of images for reference and i thought this should be easy, well i was wrong. I had no dimensions just images, so everything i modeled, i had to do visually look at and try to get the scale right. It was harder then i thought. i wanted to add a little flair to the gun in certain spots as i was modeling it. The gun itself was fun to do, but very time consuming. The program i use to render my 3D CAD is called Hypershot, and in order to apply colors and materials to things, they each need to be a separate part, so i basically had to build every single piece in a giant assembly in order to be able to apply the materials and colors correctly. This was one of the things that ended up taking a lot of time on the gun.

I had to model the trigger, the rubber grip, the gun stock, the magazine, the screws, lights, laser site, the slide on top thats connected to the laser site, and the bullet ejection cover plate. It was a lot to do and put detail into every little piece.

My final task this week was finishing up the gun stock, the main part of the gun. In my early renders my edges were very hard and Mrs Doublefire suggested i put a break edge to smooth it out (basically radii or fillet's). This actually worked to my benefit as i wanted to blend the front handle of the gun into the nose anyway, but would need it to be blended. The blending task took about 2 days, just a very time consuming task trying to get them to look right at the intersection.

So 3 weeks later I have finally finished my little project, what started out a simple futuristic bullet project turned into the massive renders you see below.

The 3D CAD software I used to create my models is: Pro-E Wildfire 3

The 3D Rendering Software is called: Hypershot

This should be in the Halo Universe forum, but you don't have veteran status...

I really like those renders!

Moved this over to the Halo Universe section for you. :)

Saw this on HBO earlier (via Bungie on Twitter), really nice looking renders (and models of course)!

I used to use Hypershot myself, not sure what your CAD software is like having never used it but are you able to assign materials to the model in the CAD software? I had the same problem initially when doing the ODST pistol (applying the materials to the model for rendering) but then discovered I could assign materials/colours to the model before rendering. Granted that was in Solidworks so it may be, and probably is, different for your software but if possible that could speed things up.

thanks belakor for moving this

You can assign materials in cad, but it doesnt care over to hypershot. Here is how hypershot works, if i made this pistol as one solid piece i could only apply materials and colors to it as a whole, it wont treat it as a surfaces, but the work around which is more time consuming, is build your model and all your pieces like screws, lights, grips, bullets as separate pieces, then bring that assembly into hypershot and you can then apply colors to everything.

so for every color you see in my render its a an actual solid model part, that way i could assign materials and colors to them. the slide on top is actually separate i just made it the same color as the gun body because it looks better that way., but essentially the whole gun is one huge assembly, in case i ever want to do different colors and materials.

i used to use solidworks a couple years ago 2006 version, and i like what it can do, it makes modeling fast and easy, its only draw back is large file sizes, like in excess of 50 meg.

there is supposed to be hypershot HD coming out soon, im kinda excited to see what that offers.

This is amazing. I have tried my hand at 3d designing without much progress. But your work is great. I really like the chrome it gives it a really good look.

No problem.

I thought that might be the case, I had the same problem with other 3D software but thankfully Solidworks is able to apply colors/materials and have them work in Hypershot :)

I prefer to model as assemblies just because it reduces load and is helpful when you're going to mill the models ;)

Anyways, looking forward to any other models you might post :D

i didnt know that about solidworks materials carrying over, thats awesome!

im working on the Halo 3 sniper rifle now, probably about 3 weeks out with all the detail involved. ill make sure i post renders as i get them done. im starting with the magazine and a real .50 calibar round.

Model looks awesome, nice work.

just a preview of the sniper rifle. Here is the magazine, now im assuming from forge the bottom of the magazine has a molded piece of plastic around it. I also had to custom make some tabs on top to hold the bullets in. The bullets are not in this render.
