ODST Build

More progress has been made on the attachment system for my backpack, i have used luggage bands to fasten the backpack to my chestplate in addition to three 7kg magnets.

The luggage band attachment points sits in my shoulders underneath a panel that folds up, this is to hide them when i take it off. I also made sure that i can attach my DMR on the side.

This works really well and was able to hold about 3 kg walking around.
so im very happy with how this has turned out so far.

Next up is priming it for paint this weekend. : )

Finally priming time!
The way I usually prime foam is by first heat sealing it with a heat gun, and then using PVA glue (wood glue) watered down to a paint like consistency and painting it on 3-4 layers, you know a layer is done when it is transparent. Make sure to use a brush that you are not attached too since this will most likely ruin it for painting other things. I usually rinse mine in water between layers, but after a while you feel some glue build up on it.

This hardens the foam and makes sure that i have a nice surface to paint on, it also helps to keep the paint from cracking.
Next up is painting it! : )

So next up was a bit of a painting spree, i managed to finish both my backpack and shoulders.
First up the paints i used here was model paints for pigment and some cheaper hobby paint to make it last over a larger surface.
For some simple weathering i used a cheap wide brush, and perhaps stupidly i used a small brush for painting most of the surface

And after a few hours of painting i think it did turn out pretty well.

While i was painting the armor i also did some dry brushing on my pistol and lo and behold it looks like metal!

Now i only have the gauntlets and stomach plate left to paint, and then i got a lot of rigging to do.

Lol thanks!

I did test it with a 1.4L water bottle in it and it held up pretty well, i definitly need another magnet and possibly some kind of safety to hold it on if the magnets fail.
as someone who does a cosplay for a character with a backpack and a big one for that matter i would highly suggest adding some sort of strap with a buckle (if you want it to be removable while wearing it) at cons there is such a high probability of something running into you or bumping it on something that without a ton of magnets holding it on its very likely to fall.

This backpack is bolted onto my backplate, but I have a strap that runs from my backplate to my belt in the front, which also acts as a sort of harness and leaves less stress on the back after a long con day

You did fantastic building the backpack, though, which makes me consider building one for myself at some point

At the moment the backpack sits on my back is with two straps and 3 magnets, it is a bit unstable so i am definitely going to remake it later.

And as you say it would definitely be more secure with a proper harness, since the weight does push the chestplate down and up against my neck.
And just as you say sometimes it falls off the magnets when moving a lot, but the straps keeps it from falling to the floor but not from wobbling around. so it works good enough but i do want to improve it in the future.

So im probably going to implement something similar to what you have when i remake my chest in a month or so, right now im in a bit of a con crunch so time is a bit limited. : )

Thank you! im very happy with how it came out.

So it has been a while since my last update, i have finished a lot of things.
First of the shoulders have been mounted:
20260303_110605.jpg20260303_105135.jpg
They sit around my arms with elastic bands and they actually have great movement.
20260303_105115.jpg

As for the backpack i added mounting points for my DMR which im able to put on and take off (with minor difficulty/ skill issue on my part) by myself.

Here are also some better pictures on how the backpack is mounted with the straps:
20260303_105203.jpg20260303_105211.jpg20260303_105239.jpg

Also the straps are adjustable, not that it is usefull since it only needs one lenght, but i thought it was neat : )
20260303_105255.jpg20260303_105253.jpg

Finally i finished the arms and bodyarmor:

And here is literly the only picture from the back showing my full suit on thanks to Energibill:

Here is a belated Update on my helmet:
during my excursion to Närcon winter, Energibill managed to convince me to remake my visor with some pvc sheet he brought for me, while i was a bit skeptical to the change he was definitely right that it looks better, and now it is one way see-through.

My visor is made up of 4 parts similar to how AndrewDFT made his ODST visor, this pattern is made by wrapping the visor print from galactic armory in plastic wrap and making a tape pattern from that. And then it is held together with hot-glue.
20260308_113542.jpg20260308_113556.jpg20260308_113611.jpg

I also got this helmet attachement he didn't need for his JFO helmet so i got to use it for my helmet. And it turned out pretty good.

Pssst your shins look proportional, how did you measure it, I tried my ankle to like an inch over my knee but still seems small
So i used AndrewDFTs old odst shin pattern Link, the way i mesured it was from the top of my foot to my knee like i illustrated on the image bellow.
Measure.png

Then i traced his pattern and Just scaled everything untill the mid part of the shin was that size and it worked pretty well. This should work for pepakura as well as long as you are able to measure the front lenght. and also make sure the width is good so it is not too tight/loose.

Makes sense, thank you! Imma screenshot that if ya don’t mind

Big progress has been made or you could say i got a bit sidetracked making a backpack for my suit. : )

For the templates i used Pepakura files:
Modeled By: Th3 FETT MAN
Unfolded by: Spartan-h16
and slightly more unfolded by myself
File added bellow.
The foam i used is from Biltema, other swedish people will probably be familiar with them, for glue i just used regular Hot Glue.

And yes this thing is meant to work as a backpack where I'm able too keep some cosplay aid things for conventions.
How do i access these things you may ask?

MAGNETS! they are great for these things. :3

And by using the attachment point for my DMR I'm able to put on and take off the backpack by my self as well, and believe it or not but it is able to carry a bit over 1.2 kg( tested with a 3/4 full soda bottle ) as is which I'm really happy about.

And here is a video of me putting it on:

Great Idea making it out of foam. I printed it out of PLA and its really heavy on the long run. Also I love your detail fotos. Keep going with your awesome build! The only thing I thought its a bit off is the sizing on the first glace. But after comparing it to some ingame fotage it looks good (y)

Thank you! : )
I was a bit on the fence about the scale too before i got it mounted, but honestly outside of the side pockets being too wide it seems to be to about the right scale. A thing that needs fixing however is the mounting since the magnets are a weekpoint when putting weight into it and moving around.
