Hello, just a few quick questions regarding using foam for armor builds. Gone through the stickies, but didn't find what I was looking for.

My questions relate to the N7 armor featured in Mass Effect 2. Here is a reference: http://images.wikia.com/masseffect/images/9/99/N7Armor.png

I've heard of a lot of different types of foam: balsa, EVA, etc. For this build, I need something that will allow me a slight range of motion on the stomach/torso area, so that I can drive, bend, and so on. However, the material needs to be sturdy enough to sit on it without ruining it. (Honestly don't care about the pliability of the other sections of armor, just the stomach that has me concerned. I'm building two chestpieces: one male, one female. The female version of the armor has two stripes down the abdomen, whereas the male version has that "six pack". I could probably get away with breaking the male stomach armor up into pieces to provide better movement, but due to the female armor's design, that's a no-go on that front.) I'm not going to be running around playing paintball in this, but I'd rather the armor stand up to me being a klutz and walking into things.
Since I have not tried this medium before, I'm not really certain where to start.
What type/grade/whatever of foam can accomplish this?
Should I use two different types, one for flexibility and one for sturdiness?
Is there a certain way to warp the foam to the desired shapes, like using heat, or would simply bending the pieces be just as good?

(Any tutorials would be greatly appreciated.)

Thanks everyone!

I have a thread with my build and templates and videos on how to scale them. I am using EVA Foam and it is great. I am painting mine with Plastidip which comes in colors so it seals it and colors it. Check out my posts along with Bryce Youtsey.

I would have to echo everyone else....

The EVA foam is the way to go... things of note:

1. Wal-mart typically has two kinds of EVA mats....

A) Multi colored kids room mats - typically 1/2" thinkness bright colors -herringbone pattern

B) Gold's Gym floor mats - 1/2" thickness - grey - diamond plate pattern....

These mats are good for the price... typically 6 mats for about $20... I however have started steering clear of the diamond pattern cause it can cause problems when layering the foam with thick diamond pattern.... just my .02 cents

The other VERY popular alternative is to look at Harbor Freight or local auto parts store....

Harbor Freight's mats are a touch thinner at 3/8" but the herringbone pattern doesn't cause any issues like the diamond plate pattern.... typically 4 mats per $17 or so....

Definitely check out Ben's videos first... and then let us know if you have more questions... LOTSA people using foam around here that can help you out!!!

The diamond pattern problem we find is with adding any detail work, so we just hit the diamond pattern area with the belt sander. The plasti dip will then cover any bad areas. it has worked for us so far.

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

@Ithica
Your build is amazing! I haven't had the opportunity to watch most of your videos yet, but I did view the one where you worked on the helmet. Very nice. I'll have to check the other ones out too. Looks great!

@Cujo
Yeah, my local Home Depot sports the Gold's Gym-type mats, but the kids play mats seem easier to work with/softer. I hear this stuff eats knife blades? The only issue would be regarding durability. I assume it's fairly low compared to the others?

I'll probably get a set of each type of foam, just to fiddle with.
Thanks again, guys, really appreciate it!
