Hey everybody!

As some of you may have noticed, my progress has slowed here on the forums. This Thread, or "WIP" will explain everything.

Just 2 weeks ago, I finally came to the conclusion that I would not be able to finish my Weta ODST armour in time for the “Halo 3:ODST” launch on September 22 of this year. So, I began to think of a way I could be ready for the next game release. So, since the next game I’m very interested in seeing and playing is the new Halo game, “Halo Reach”. Now, what better way to show I’m a hard-core Halo fan by going to EB Games dressed up as the Master Chief.

Now, the traditional thing to do would be to make the Halo CE, Halo 2, or Halo 3 version armour. I chose to go with the far cooler looking armour. The armour from the “Starry Night” Halo 3 commercial. Its slightly differs from the Halo 3 version armour. It has more detail, its somewhat more practical, and plain and simple looks far cooler.

From there, I had to choose weather I would do the traditional Resin, Fiberglass, Bondo and Spot Putty option, the 100% sculpt and mold option, or the Clay over pep and mold option. After carefully looking at my options, I chose option #3, Clay over pep.

Since I had never used clay before, I began researching the best clay to use for this kind of thing. I came across this clay from a company named “Van Aken”. Because the clay was Sulfur free, was not very expensive, and was available at my local Michaels, I chose to use that brand of clay.

Because I had never sculpted before, I chose to sculpt a hand plate first. I started with finding a reference picture of the Starry Night hand plate that I could use. I then drew up some blueprints for the hand plate. I would have used a pep hand plate, but the shape of the Starry night hand plate was somewhat different from the Halo 3 version.

I then constructed a basic cardboard hand plate as a base for the clay. Shortly after, I Poked a bunch of little holes in the hand plate to help the clay stay on the cardboard.

DSCN1604.jpg

Then I added about 5mm of clay to each exposed side of the hand plate.

From there, I began to sculpt the basic shapes of the hand plate.

Now I simply smoothed the hand plate out..

I still have a bit of work to do before molding it, but so far, it looks awesome in my opinion for a first-time sculptor.

I also have the Helmet pepped, Resined, Fiberglassed and ready for clay. Pictures of that soon.

Now, I have a few people I would like to thank for the help they have given me with the sculpting, and soon to be molding.

-Newspartancreator-For the large amount of help from making the basic shape of the hand plate, to the final details and soon to be molding and casting

-Ben Streeper-For the advice on molding materials

-LastSpartan-For helping me choose the right materials and continued support

-Mjolnir Folower-for the continued support and advice throughout this project, and my many other projects

I will update as much as possible. Wish me luck on the rest of the costume.

Cheers!

I will be doing a few casts of each part as I go. I have everything figured out so I will have enough funds to complete the costume, and have enough funds to make a few casts of it for myself, a few friends, and you guys at the 405th.

Pâte  Modeler.

They made a mistake on that wrap! :p

Looking great so far! Are you using a feathering tool for smoothing, or chemicals?

Nooo, you beat me to it. I was going to do this. I wasn't going to make it as different as yours, I was just going to change the color scheme. Good luck anyways.

Wow, I must say that this is going to be one hell of a build. Making everything based off of the "Starry Night" trailer (which was amazingly epic) could provide the best suit of armor this community has seen. I wish you luck mate, as your going to need it on the long road ahead.

@Wtfmfkr-Thanks for the comment!

@LastSpartan-Lol, I noticed that too. And, so far for smoothing, I have been using some painters trowels. They serioisly work wonders. But I do plan on using some chemicals for the final smoothing before adding a coat or 2 of primer and molding it.

@Underdogg13-You can still do it, you just have to keep up with me ;) . Lol.

@Adulese-Thanks, I just hope I dont screw it up for you and the rest of the community.

I will be making an interest thread soon once I have a first pull of the handplate for those of you who are interested. Remember, the sale of these things is what helps me create the armour.

Cheers guys and galls, and now im off to sculpt the helmet!

im tempted to join you on this quest! i may buy hand plates from you and skip ahead to boots. Im with you my friend, we can share trade secrets lol.

underdogg too of course. ive read stuff he says on the forum- hes blunt and to the point, i like him

Gracias :D

As for making one of these for myself, I've got too many things I have to worry about right now. I won't start another suit until like October. :\

hha fair enough, as long as someone keeps me motivated i wont quit. i have a DF4L fully fiberglassed and bondoed helmet sitting in my garage begging to be sanded, so i wont have to worry about it for a while. hopefully itll be done by halloween though, but yeh ill post my clay pics here so you can all see how much worse i am at it :) lol

I'm glad you're trying this! Coincidentally I was JUST thinking about this the other day. Can't wait to see more, you've done superb work on the handplate so far.

you should get in on it jareyes! make the pieces you havent pepped yet, who knows you may be great at it!

on a side note- what is everyones clay of choice and why?

-best detail

-lowest price

-easiest to work with

Wow, I can see I have inflicted some ideas and also got some people going on their projects!

Anyhow, I will have the pictures of the Fiberglassed helmet tomorrow. Along with a few surprises up my sleeve.

Cheers guys and galls!

lol nice, im excited. ive decided to sprint to the finish with my helmet at least to the point where the shape is final, then clay over some boots. Mr.Oreo is soing the same thing with clay over pep, as well as DYSTORTEDINC with his high detail helmet.

That HANDPLATE IS THE SHMEXX.I can't wait to see this come along.ooooo....im gonna be watching this.

BTW, when I was younger I was interested in sculpting and I had used that clay. I remember that the color you used on the handplate particularly is quite brittle. I suggest you use a different color on anything else that you'd be using clay on. Though I doubt there's anything else you're going to be using clay on anyways, but just a word of advice anyways.

Woah, what did I just type? Anyways twice in one sentence? That's redundancy!

Im gonna use clay over pep for my faulty pep ODST pieces, that way i can fix it up,some pep pieces are so stuffed, bondo cant even fix it.

Alright, update time!

I have the helmet fiberglassed, and I’ve started the sculpting.

Excuse the bad picture quality:

The great news is, there is no warping, and it was my first fiberglass job. I also didn’t resin the piece before fiberglassing it!

DSCN1622.jpg

To make the clay stick to the piece, I applied some textured spray paint to it.

DSCN1625.jpg

The results once dry:

Hope you like the update. I’ll keep working on it.

Cheers!

Alright. Looks really good. I may be able to buy a set of handplates to help you in your cause or even send you some HD built pep so you can just work on fiberglassing and modeling them.
