Trying to make a portal turret?

Hey guys, I'm trying to make a portal turret based on a Google Sketch-up model. yes I know there is already a turret made up here on the forums. I just wanted one that looked a bit more like this.

Unfortunately, Google sketchup seems to render each 2 dimensional object as a 3d thing with each face having TWO SIDES to it. (inside side and outside side. even on closed objects.)

Is it possible to change this setting in sketch-up? or do I need to have it made using another program? What do I do?

PS - Cnet makes it incredibly difficult to upload anything to it.
