lol I wish I had enough post to look but your concepts and armor look awesome. I love how you're adding to it and making it more customized it's really sweet great job.

Not much progress with the cash situation yet. I have a possible $50.00 coming in soon, and I may be able to sell my old half bondoed ODST helmet. I may also be able to do a run of some Jun ghillie hoods. I have a bunch of burlap, OD fabric and OD mesh laying around, so I figure I can make a few bucks from that.

With any luck I can have a finished UNSC SOCOM Trooper helmet by the Halo: Reach release. But, that completely depends on my cash situation in the coming days/weeks.

I’ll see what I can do in terms of a sniper ghillie hood run in the classifieds. I’ve seen a bunch of Jun WIP’s popping up, so I may have some luck there.

I’ll keep you all posted.

Thats great man! :) I think there's definatlly an interest in those hoods so you could probably make a quick buck off of that.

Just got done reading 7 pages of pure awsomeness. This is looking completely mind blowing! keep it up! and a tip on gloves for UNSC soldiers, if you really want that armor look on the glove, you could get a pair of american football lineman gloves, they have the "armor" padding stitched onto the glove so it looks really nice for projects such as this, and guess what? they do a great job of protecting your hands from football collisions! who wouldve thought!

Once again, thanks for the comments everybody!

I’m posting with great news, progress pictures, and an announcement. I figure I might as well go in the order that I just typed, so here we go…

First up is the good news. I was assigned to clean my bedroom/workshop/”man cave”, and while curiously searching through numerous pant pockets, I accumulated an astonishing $215.00 plus some change. This goes to show that when you go on a date with your girlfriend, you should always empty your pant pockets before taking them off in such a hurry ; D .

Second up, progress report…

With the $215.00 I found, I went on a spending spree to gather more clay, sculpting tools, paint, padding, fabric, and some display frames for my numerous posters to promote encouragement and enthusiasm during the remainder of the helmets build. Its amazing how quickly $215.00 can disappear when you are in need of costuming materials…

Regardless, every penny of the money has gone to good use. I hung up what posters I could to insure every time I look up from my work stressed out at 4:00am in the morning, I get a renewal of energy and willingness to finish the helmets sculpt before the end of this weekend.

I just have to be careful about the general direction I look to, as the other half of my bedroom/workshop/man cave is covered in Iron Maiden posters and a stack of amplifiers with my guitar sitting beside them… Nothing like getting clay stuck between the frets and strings of your guitar after spending an hour cleaning the clay out the day before.

Note to self; move musical instruments/equipment to the basement.

As far as the clay being purchased, most of it has been applied to the helmet. I have been making a large amount of modifications to the helmets design to keep myself happy, aswell as insure it fits my head properly when I finally mold/cast it.

As you can clearly see from the pictures below, I have mainly concentrated on the helmets brim and back sections. I was not very happy with the original design, so I decided to take a closer look at some Halo 3 concept art to take a few ideas from them directly.

I have also been busy experimenting with some new tools I picked up. As I have said before, I am fairly new to sculpting, and by no means a professional. I’m starting to pick up on a few new techniques, and each one makes sculpting this helmet even more enjoyable and easier.

Quick explanation; That wall-like thing around the opened edges of the helmet are in-progress mold walls. They will make the application of the silicone a little easier, aswell as make casting a little less stressful aswell.

This helmet has been in the works since December 27, 2009 believe it or not. I’m very glad I have taken the past few months to gather more experience before molding and casting officially. Just by looking at the first picture I took of the helmet, it would have not been very pretty.

I have decided to make a slightly more custom looking glove for the SOCOM Trooper. I took a fair bit of inspiration from the Halo 3: ODST gloves as you can clearly see. However, I have aimed to insure the design is practical to the design of the base gloves.

I believe that is up for the progress report. Onto the announcement.

I’m planning on pausing this WIP after the helmet is completed to work on a secret project for Halloween. You can see its un-official announcement on my blog with a quick picture of a small chunk of progress I have already made with it. I will be continuing this build after Halloween, but I believe I need a break from sculpting for a little while.

Once again, let me know what you think. All constructive criticism and personal opinions are welcome. At this stage in the game, I need complete honesty to insure I can sell a few of these helmets after I mold it and cast it. I am hoping to not make the same mistake I did with the shoulders.

Stay frosty,

The chest armour at this point is being re-designed. I decided against the ODST-like nature of its design, and have decided to make it look slightly more marine-like. However, I may decide to just use ODST chest/back armour with a few tweaks because it is more practical then marine chest/back armour. The flexibility factor is always one of the top priorities, and the original concept, I must admit, was having some problems.

I'll see what I can come up with concept-wise.

Everything looks great man. I've finally moved into my new house after about a year of limbo; so, once I get all the damn boxes out of my garage I will be able to set up my work bench and work on my own stuff as well as Gawking over yours!

Anyways I think the helmet is looking great and I think that swithing back to a more marine style chest plate may be a good idea but, in the end its all up to you.

BTW. So true about the pants thing :p

I love the design! cant ait to see teh finished results!

Good job so far I can tell you from experience that helmet is deceptive it looks pretty simple and straightforward as far as shape and detail but trying to get the look right is a pain. It took me several attempts to get mine how I wanted it to look.

If ya need any reference I have a pretty good collection of pics and concept art rounded up.

Cheers!

holy **** (excuse my lingo) damn that thing is sexy.......

Once again, thank-you all for the encouraging comments. I’m rapidly nearing the end of the helmets construction (With the exception of the strike shield and goggles), so I am beginning to need everybody’s completely honest opinions and criticism.

Now, as I said above, I need completely honest criticism before molding this Thursday. The shoulders were a complete failure, and I do not want to spend all of this time and money on yet another armour part that I can not make my initial funds back from. I know things may be a little early to have a interested/not interested opinion(of coarse depending on price- I assure you it will be reasonable), but I really want to know if I should continue along with this design or not.

The basic sculpt is nearly finished, so the only details missing are a few indented shapes/groves, aswell as one or two more key components. I believe at this point things should be fairly close to being able to have a yes/no. I’m only looking for interest, not buyers. As I said before, I just want to make sure I’m not wasting money/time.

You can judge for yourself regarding the rest of the remaining details that have yet to be sculpted in by looking at the helmets concept.

Again, all opinions/criticism are welcome and encouraged. Please post your honest opinion.

Thanks in advance,

honestly, it's look great!
it looks so smooth and you said you didn't even finish.
All I would add is the details like you have in the picture.
I CAN'T WAIT FOR YOU TO UPDATE!
(lol)

Looks seriously awesome mate. Once you get some details on there I really don't see what else you could do to make it better.
