When Ben was taken to the temple after being shot by Sayeed, Richard wasn′t aware either that the smoke monster resides there or that smokie is the guy in black (who Jacob was talking to on the beach).
So smokie sees that Ben is being treated by the others and invents a story to help create his wormhole... To tell Jacob that he knows Ben to be able to kill him (Jacob). This frightens Jacob slightly, who in turn, blanks Ben, refusing ever to meet him in person which is the reason Locke (or the fake Locke) gives to Ben to kill him. This would also explain why smokie would respond to Ben′s call when the freighter people arrived.
I think smokie has been playing cat and mouse with the islands inhabitants for a long time, waiting for his moment to strike.
