Quick update.

Started on the launcher and housing, though still carbody filling the inside of the rocket module pieces, but less and less of that to do. These pieces are supposed to be 40mm thick, but thanks to a miscalculation of dimensions (I blame it on the calliper!) it's 39mm. when I'm finished, I'll attach a sheet of Styrene on the outside edges to fix it.

However, thanks to the carelessness of another student, wasn't able to progress much. The abrasive surface on the Bobbin sander is smeared in melted plastic from whatever idjit who applied too much pressure on their material! Also, I'm stuck at home (it's my day off, but I want to go in to get as much done before Christmas) waiting for the cable guys to come over.

But on the up, will pop into town later and look to pick up a copy of the Halo Encyclopaedia (for reference, of course ;) ) and a new Live subscription.

As always you're doing fantastic work. I can't wait to receive this baby! :D

Heh, I'm just wondering how I'm going to get up to you. It'll be funny being pulled over by the police trying to get on the train with it!

Bobbin sander was sorted out on Friday, so cleaned up these 2 and cut out 2 more, though those are still abit rough.

I've broken up for the Christmas holidays now however, and wont be back in the workshop until after the 4th of January, but in between Christmassy stuff and my business plane, I'll get some detail design work done if I have the chance. The big part will be sorting out the locking mechanism. I'm edging towards a drop bar that'll run all the way through top housing to the bottom housing.

AAAAAAANND We're Back! Christmas holidays are over, and so is the associated shopping, wrapping, unwrapping, eating, drinking and being merry! Now it's time to get back at the proverbial grinding stone. I had Monday off due to a staff training day, but I went in today to get started again as soon as possible. Continued work on the housing, though still sanding and car body filling on the Rocket Module.

Thats one complete housing piece (cept for the inside, I need some Flexi-MDF), I'll finish the other one tomorrow.

Sorry the pictures are abit blurry, I bought a new phone just after xmas and the camera isn't as good as my old one.

That last picture reminds me of super-intendent

Heh, aliens, smiley faces and what-not, but not once did the SI cross my mind. Guess I've been playing too much MW2.

Yes, MW2 is awesome, cept when someone on your own team kills you for your care package (I only really play Hardcore)

Bah, Humbug! Thanks to sudden late night snow, I'm can't go into the workshop today. But I've got abit more Pro/DESKTOP work to do, so today wont be totally wasted.

coming along pretty good. when is your deadline ? so i can mark it on my calender lol

My college deadline is on the 22nd of January, though due to the recent snow storms and other stuff, I'm hoping, if i ask them very nicely, my tutors will give me some extra time. Then I'll have a glorious 2 weeks off to plan my next project. However, as I've mentioned, I will only be taking it so far, afterwards Pete's go-to prop builder will be making moulds from my model. Once I get it back though, I'll carry on with it, including painting, though that will take longer since I'll be busy with my semester 2 projects.

Managed to get in today to college, and put together the second housing part.

The little bit of MDF chipping is there keep the pieces properly aligned while the glue sets over the weekend, also, the closest edge you see there still needs to be sanded down.

Looks good, but how heavy is the MDF?

If I had looked back a little I would have seen it is filled with foam. Great job!

what college are you at / what subject?

also what is the blue foam called and where can i get some ?

I'm not a good judge of weight to be honest, so I'm not sure, but I think I'm aiming for something reasonable.

Yeah, lots and lots of bluefoam! Had I anticipated all the work I needed to do with it, I'd have tried Chemiwood instead, but the college doesn't have significant supplies of it.

I'm studying a Foundation Degree in 3D Design, my speciality discipline is Model making. As for the Bluefoam, it's a general term for Extruded Polystyrene. Try specialist DIY and model making stores for it. For UK model makers close to London, try the 4D Model shop in Aldgate, just make sure you ask for extruded polystyrene and not expanded, that's important. I'm not really an expert, since I get most of my materials from the workshops stock.

Wondered into London today, to the 4D Model shop in fact. I picked up some 1mm thick Styrene for some panel detailing, as well as some chrome tube for the front grip assembly. I'll have a go at working out the dimensions for the panel detailing tomorrow if I'm not too busy doing other stuff, I just have to get my new printer to cooperate with Pro/DESKTOP so I print out some more ortho drawings.

very nice looking want to make one really bad where did u get the cardboard tubes?

Any stationary or office supply store. anything around 80mm diameter should do the trick. Once I'm finished, I'll break down my orthographic drawings for people to use if they wish.

Master Cheeze said:
F***ing sweet work on your tube dood as well. You going to put a revolving mechanism in it as well?

Unfortunately no. The only way I fingered I could do that was through some heavy engineering, and not only does that take up alot of time and expense, but my college doesn't have the facilities.

unfortunately, I hit a stumbling block yesterday. while cutting in the recesses to the launcher body, where all the other components will fit, I was wondering why the launcher housing was able to fit with about a centimetre of space when I'd measured it to fit, and hadn't tidied up the edges of the gap. It suddenly dawned on me, that I hadn't cut in to the portion I'd marked out for housing, but rather the space between that and grasp at the end. So I now have to start from scratch on that part, but it could be a blessing in disguise, as when I went back to my ortho drawing, I realised that had I followed the design exactly, it would only leave a half centimetre of material between the spaces for the housing and the shoulder rest, which would create a weak point in the model. so what I'll do now is eliminate that little bit of material and build the launcher body in 2 parts.

Update time! would have done so earlier, but I've been knackered from a late night/early hours MW2 session with some friends.

rebuilt the launcher body, and have started on the grips and shoulder rest.

I now only have a week left on the project before it has to be marked, but I only have the grips and detailing to do, and then it's off to Master Cheeze to be moulded and cast.
