Here's a very good reason that I think the Chief won't die, and I think Bungie knows this, and has acted on it.

For Pete's sake, not necessarily! Why do people assume that he's going to die? I'm not saying that he most definitely will not, but let's not get stuck on him dying. For one, it's not set in stone, and for two, this site is full of Master Chiefs! It's devastating to our ego!
