Okay 405th, I'm back with a vengeance!

First, the boring stuff! Its probably been at least a year since my last postings, and that wasn't even a finished build. But its not because I've forgotten this place, I've been a very busy man! College keeps me pretty occupied, but that doesn't mean I haven't been working on things in the mean time. I've done some Bioshock stuff and a pair of Long Fall Boots, but nothing Halo related, so I didn't want to post it here. If anyone is interested in my other work, check me out on my Tumblr.

Anyway, here is what you came here for!

A Halo 3 variant Gravity Hammer! This has been something I've wanted to do since I've first seen it. But, I've been waiting till I thought I've had the proper skills to tackle it, and the time is now.

Without further ado, here is my current progress:

Now, normally I like to wait till I have a lot more progress, not that I don't already, but...

Before I talk about the build, I need your opinions!

I could continue and finish making my hammer for myself...

Or

I could make it a kit!

Now, the reason I ask is because of the cost. I'd much rather do this as a kit, because I can make all my parts, then mold everything, and cast consistent, solid, light weight parts. However, if I only make one, it's much cheaper to continue how I am now, and end with a single piece.

So what I need to know is...

How many people would be interested in a Halo 3 style Gravity Hammer Kit?

Even if just a few people are seriously interested, that should be enough to offset the cost of producing these. So please, if you are interested, comment and let me know!

And now, onto the build.

I'll keep it short for now, if you guys want super detailed info on the build so far, check out my tumblr.

I got a Solidoodle 3D printer for Christmas this past year. The printer is amazing, but it still has restrictions to be aware of, so I'm using it to print details. I used PVC pipe to make the handle, and printed custom fittings to go between the different handle sizes. I've also printed the base and cap for the hand guard, the box-thing that attaches between the blade and the shaft, the "gravity emitters" for the hammer head, the detail things for the pommel, and some other small pieces. Plus I have some other pieces modeled and ready to print.

The blade was originally made with pink insulation foam, then hardened with foam-coat. But it still proved to be too weak, so it's since been remade in MDF, and hollowed out to save on weight. I plan on making the hammer head as in MDF box as well.

Closing notes.

Here's the thing, it took me a nearly two months to get to this point between designing and planing, as well as modeling, printing, body shopping, and assembling, all between classes, to get to this point.

If I do kits for this, I want to rebuild the shaft. Mainly because I want to reprint the pipe fittings and casting them in plastic for durability and speed. Printing is great, but it still requires a fair amount of clean up work.

The other bad/good new is that I'm from Pittsburgh, my home/shop is in Pittsburgh, and the hammer is in Pittsburgh. I, however, am currently in Los Angeles for the summer interning at Tom Talmon Studios, and I won't be home until August.

The good news is that I brought my desktop and my 3D printer, so I'll be able to reprint all of the shaft connectors that would need remade, as well as all the parts I haven't even made yet. And I haven't glued the hand guard yet, so that and the blade are basically ready for casting when I get back. And finally I'll have like three weeks before classes start to really knock out as much as I can.

I'll keep posting as parts are re-printed, and ideas are had, and I'll definitely respond when I decide if this is gonna be a kit or not. But there might not be any mind blowing updates for a little while.

Sorry for that wall-o-text :/

So please, please let me know if you're interested in having a Gravity Hammer Kit.

Thanks for reading!

I know this is months down the line from the last post but over all looks like your doing a great job and if you made this into a kit i would be interested in one for sure.

Actually, I have decided to make the hammer a kit! It still needs some work though. The plans are set to have it done by summer time, or else I won't have time for a while to finish it.

I haven't posted anything since the original post months ago, for a few reasons. I was living in LA over the summer, and the hammer was back home in Pittsburgh. When I got back, I had classes to worry about, but I still managed to work on some new pieces.

A lot of what you see in the pictures above have been remade in solid resin, and have their molds ready to go. I'm gonna be doing some more work on it over the next few days, so keep an eye open for updates.

is it going to be life size
Yup. The in-game hammer is suppose to be around 7' tall, mine will be closer to 6'. That will keep it a little more manageable, and will actually keep the pipe for the handle closer to scale.

I'm gonna get some pics up tomorrow night.

Hey, this is looking real nice! I'm working on a full chieftain cosplay, so could you give me the dimensions you used for this hammer by any chance? It'd really help. Thanks, and good job! :p

Alright guys, I'm really bad at keeping a schedule. In fairness, I've been trying to work on this and keep up with class, but that's no excuse.

Anyway, here is my recent progress. It doesn't look quite as impressive as the last post, but all the parts have been re-printed, and then smoothed and molded.

Here's some pics:

^These two have already been connected.

^ I've been attaching connectors with epoxy. I have been notching the connectors with my dremel, and allowing the notches to fill with epoxy, giving an extra physical lock as well as the adhesive lock, once the epoxy cures.

^ I decided to try Smooth-On's XTC-3D. So far, I've only coated the hand guard pieces, but I'm really pleased with the results.

These two are next to be molded. Hopefully tomorrow, if not Friday.

^This one just got coated in primer, and I can see a bit of clean up, but its otherwise ready

^This one is ready to be molded, as is.

There is some other little stuff that's been finished too, but more of those pictures will come later.

That's it for now. I really want to post in this thread more regularly, and if I keep moving at the rate I am now, that shouldn't be much of a problem.

Sorry, I just saw this. I scaled the hammer to 6' tall, and have been basing all my measurements off of that. What kind of measurements are you looking for?

The blade bit is what is bugging me really. Got the head sorted but how I got it to fit makes the blade look way to thin, but by itself it looks fine

Update time again! I know I'm bad at constant updates, but I have got a lot of work done.

But now the entire shaft is complete! That includes the details on the pommel and the hand guard. I've also managed to mold the "gravity emitters" for the head, and have begun working on the model for the hammer head.

I re-printed the box thingy that connects the blade and the shaft, and have glued the pieces together. So far it has been smoothed with a coat of XTC-3D. But there is still a fair amount of sanding to do.

The blade is coming along nicely, and I have a rough smoothing done on one half of it.

I know there's still a lot to do, but I'm really happy with my results so far. And classes have calmed down a bit, so I'm hoping to get some serious work done over the next few weeks.

That's all I got for now. I didn't get too detailed this time around, so if anyone has questions, feel free to ask!
